Coolant Level Sensor fits BMW 318 E30 1.8 89 to 91 61311384739 Febi Quality New
I can confirm that in a cup of water no current flows. Out of water with the float downs it completes the circuit.
Dont know why ? But saves me a few minutes connecting a relay.
Sorry about the picture quality. Maybe i have purchased a cheap knock off level sensor by mistake.

+1, they definitely work that way round therefore a relay is required.

Mine is now fitted. And i can confirm no relay required as my paricular sensor obviously works in reverse.
Fitted with a little 12v buzzer. Connected to the spare f30 outlet as identified in previous threads by Mr SF.
In water no circuit. Raised up out of water a connection is made and buzzer goes off. Just sat now warming the truck up for its first run since fitting new temp gauge ( now att 55). Repaired cooler and level sensor.
Weeping a bit from temp sender adaptor but apart from that all good so far.
