Hello,

I have a 1989 land rover 90 2.5 petrol.

The problem is I just had the head gasket replaced yet I am still experiencing water loss at a large rate. I don't have any milky residue on the oil cap so I don't know what it could be any tips would help me greatly.

I was going to change all the hoses feeding the radiator as they are as old the vehicle themselves.

But any ideas people have would be much appreciated.

Heater matrix ?

Some water leaks don't show until the pressure is up !!

Take her on a run for a few miles until she's properly warmed up and the stop and check everything.

You don't say which engine you have. MIne is a N/A and I found that the short hose underneath the stat housing leaked slightly ... but only when it was warm ;) Cured by half a turn on the jubilee clip :D:D

New to all this my engine is just a straight 6 2.5 petrol, the water stays fine when she is just warming up but when I stop the water is gone and I have to refill, I will check all the jubilee clips.

Interesting! could you please post a picture of the engine? Back in the mid 90s a friend of mine told me that he once owned a 6-cyl 90 and I never came across anything of the sort so I thought it was a retro-fit.

They did fit the BMW 2.5l in line 6 to some Defenders in South Africa IIRC, not in 89 though! Might be an interesting 90 you have there, I second the request for a pic!

For the leak you'll have to get it all up to temp and start looking, I'd check the bottom of the pump anyway and all the pipes & matrix

There was a bmw 2.8 diesel for the South Africa market in the late 90's. At some point before this there was a 2.8 turbo diesel Isuzu engine for South Africa. LRO did a comparison and favoured the Isuzu against the UK spec models at the time. It was yellow. The bmw version wasn't available at the point. They wanted LR to offer it in the UK but it didn't happen.

Land Rover Defender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

bmw 2.8:

Land Rover South Africa offered a unique Defender during the period the group was owned by BMW. Between 1997 and 2000, the Defender 90 and 110 were offered with a BMW petrol engine alongside the normal Tdi engine. The engine was the BMW M52 2800 cc, straight-six, 24-valve engine as found in the BMW 328i, 528i, 728i and the Z3. Power and torque output for this engine was 142 kW (190 hp) @ 5500 rpm and 280 N·m (207 lb·ft) @ 3500 rpm. This option was offered due to a demand for a petrol-driven alternative to the diesel engine after production of the V8 Defender had ended. The vehicles were built at Rosslyn outside Pretoria. Total production for the 2.8i was 632 Defender 90s and 410 Defender 110s. Early models were not speed-restricted, but later models were limited to 160 km/h.

That's the one, I have a 2.5l E46 that I might break and wondered what they were like to drive. Never found anyone that's driven one though.

What you've got under your bonnet is not just an engine, it's the holy grail. It's the mother of all engines, it's the venerable V8 so please treat it with the respect and reverence it deserves. By calling it a 6 cylinder you have insulted it. Now go out there, lift that hood and apologize to it :)

OK - one thing to check as well is the condition of the radiator cap. If it's the Rover V8 they can push the water out with a bad cap and look like they're ****ing it everywhere.

Another section to check is the front cover, and the intake manifold gaskets. had one of them that had an inexplicable loss of coolant for a long time till the front cover gasket finally failed out (the bit the pump is mounted to). The bypass hoses for the heater are a source of irritation as well - the front set by the water pump and the rear set connecting the metal pipe bit to the heater matrix.

Damn plumber's nightmare, that engine... :)

I have apologised to 'Betsy' she forgave me and all is well.

I have checked and tightened the jubilee clips and am looking at replacing all the hoses due to it having a brand new water pump and gasket.
