If you are poking around that area, replace the small bore pipe, between the rad and the expansion tank. Not expensive, and easily replaced, but very easily broken if knocked, and then you are stranded. Time and heat makes them harden.

If you are removing pipes, invest in a set of pipe clamp remover tool... so much easier. Pipes and clamps I'd be replacing if you dont know how old they are... Ive had them blow before.

Thanks for all the advice.
Having replace the large top hose clip (in picture 1), I've now had to replace the clamp on the smaller hose that comes out of the top of the radiator (in picture 2) since coolant was spluttering out of this when the engine got to temperature. It could be a coincidence that both clips became weak and needed replacing? But I've been reading some other thread which have me worried that there is an underlying cause that is creating over-pressure in the coolant system. Someone said that they replaced their water pump and this rectified the problem, other said head gasket or cylinder head.
The fan belt has always squealed on start up. The temperature dial has always been in the middle, although I've begun to get a bit paranoid about whether it is a mm above where it should be.
Can someone suggest what the best thing to do is, if a coolant leak now comes in a different place?
Andrew

On an older car you can spend hours chasing one leak after another, connections get disturbed, and hoses get past their best. Fresh coolant in my experience seems to 'find' weak spots where you previously didn't have a problem.

Thanks. That's reassuring.
Do you know whether that small section of hose in my image 2 has a part number, or name? It is about 50mm long and ca. 5mm I/D. I've looked in the parts pamphlet that someone kindly gave me and have searched the internet for the hoses listed, but none seem to fit its description. One on my problems is that I don't know what it is called. It connects onto a small pipe that then threads its was across the top of the radiator. Mine looks a bit worn and there is a surface crack on it, so I'm inclined to replace it. I suppose it is just a piece of general purpose hose that I could pick up anywhere.

no clue sorry, but it looks straight so as you say, any section of standard heater hose of the right size will work

If you go looking for problems, you can end up causing one. Just keep your eye on everything that has been discussed on your thread but don’t get panicky about it. Your temp gauge sounds like it’s doing it’s job. Check all levels every other day for a while, then weekly or two weekly after that. If you constantly worry about this that or the other, you’ll lose lose the enjoyment of the car. I’ve been there ;)

Thanks again for all the help. I've taken the car on a good run today and everything has held tight.

That’s good. I’ve just seen your posts today and from your photo my first thought was to replace that hose clip with a good quality stainless jubilee clip. The originals weaken with time and I have replaced a good few of mine on the Disco.
