Haven't posted for a while - many miles of trouble free with the D2 TD5. But, possible problem looming. It is loosing coolant relatively quickly - topping up every couple of days. No water in oil and no oil in water. I can see though a pool of water on flange on side of crankcase below turbo area. No puddles on floor when standing. It has been leaking oil from somewhere here for a while but now there seems to be water. I am suspecting oil cooler housing gasket and have a new one in stock but I am just wondering about how easy this is to replace engine in situ. Is it a turbo and manifold off job?

Also a bit worried about a cracked head - no other symptoms though, engine performing well, no smoke, steam from exhaust. Do they tend to fail in a particular spot?

Any ideas welcome!

Have a look to see if your water pump is leaking. Shine a torch down the side of the top hose and look for water lying on the **** plate.
 
Have had a good look and have found the source of the leak, but this leads to a further problem!

It is leaking from a blanking rubber plug fitted to the outlet from the oil cooler housing on the nearside of the engine. Looking at the diagrams on RAVE there should be an outlet hose fitted here returning to the bottom of the radiator. This seems to have been removed.

Leads to two questions: -

1) Should this hose be in place and by not being there is it causing damage to the engine/oil? Or, is this a popular 'bodge'?

2) The rubber cap has perished and is leaking (has a split in it) - any ideas whether this was an upgrade by LR as I need to get one asap.

The car is a very late D2 (registered 2005).

Problem solved! 54 plate D2's had this pipe blanked off with a rubber cap. Apparently coolant flow was deemed to be sufficient without it!

A new cap however costs a fortune but I have found some locally!

I did think about this but light was failing so I've managed to find a supplier here in Guildford who has one in stock that I can collect Monday. Will fit temp fix if needed over the weekend. I think it gets quite hot down there by the exhaust, probably why the rubber cap has gone rock hard and started leaking/
