Hey guys,

Just joined, so Hi!

I am in the process of selling my old weekend toy to downsize and get a cheap winter toy.

I have never owned a 4x4 before, but thought no time like the present.

The thing is, as its a weekend "toy" it will have to be a bit special so am after something like this:

I have looked on pistonheads/ebay/autotrader/forums and cannot for the life of me fine anything remotely similar.

So, do I A) keep looking or B) buy a standard one and do the work myself?

And whats the one to go for, 4.0 V8 or diesel? auto or manual?

Thanks :)

why not, it only gets driven once or twice a month and is just something a bit different.

I have the daily commuter car, so doesn't matter if this breaks down etc.

Now being the newbie I know people are likely to take the pi** but what work has the above disco had done apart from obvious suspension wheels and tyres?

It would appear they have converted it to left hand drive and abandoned it on a mountain-top.

I would say that the important thing to get straight in your mind is what do you want to do with it? Why do you want a 4x4?

Once you have worked that out and put it up on here, we will have more to work on.

Re the vehicle in the picture - it will be horrible to drive !

there you go.... land rover discovery off road | eBay if its your first off roader would say go for a 200tdi dont go v8 just yet always time at a later date.
in all honesty its more fun buying something that has had your basic mods done ie snorkel,Jate rings steering guard etc and do the rest yourself you learn a lot. and gives you a chance to bond with your beast. ;)

I think thebiglad is right.

Think hard about what use it will be put to. Do you want/need a seriously capable offroad vehicle? A blinged-up pose mobile, a vehicle to carry you and yours to do some other hobby, a towing vehicle or simply somewhere safe to cart kids about. All legitimate uses, but if you're going to "accessorise" then you need to know which way to go. Big wheels and arches may not be the answer...

The access to back seats on the D2 is just a little awkward as standard, especially if you're a little stiff and elderly. I think with that one, I'd seriously use the sunroof to get in!

I don't see why everyone needs to know what he wants to use it for. Its a toy! He clearly wants to drive round in it at weekend looking at how cool he looks in glass shop fronts. What is wrong with that! I would go v8 so it sounds good when you give it a boot load. No turbo or diesel in your oil to worry about either and you can over take without planning it a mile in advance. I would have the es with the leather and all the toys.
To make it look like that one you would have to give it a susspension lift, with prob a set of 15" wheels with a big offset or spacers so the rims clear the stearing arms and a big set of boots. (big tyres are hard to get in 16") Then you will have to get the grinder out for your arches!!! And fit a set of after marked plastic arches. It won't drive the best but you will never get clamped!

Thanks for the help guys!

I know it's not going to be the best drive, or most practical, but as above I just want to drive something different, makes people smile or laugh, a talking point!

I have also fancied doing a little off roading so being my first 4x4 may give it a go!

If anyone sees one for sale you think suits, let me know! Budget of about 6k?

Thanks

"I don't see why everyone needs to know what he wants it for".

Because he was asking for advice on what to buy and if he matches what he buys with what he uses it for, then it'll get more use, be a better value buy and make him happier. In my garage I've got a running machine. Lovely thing. An expensive model. Anyone want to buy it?

look on simmonites web site, they have some on ebay
this might give you an insight to what you can do! or buy something already done,
but as to what you want it for? you will get all different opinions here, some go up to the windows in mud, others it there pride and joy!!
it what you want!! people can only advise,

I don't see how I can be more spesific, I even supplied a picture for guidance!

I'm after a disco2 that is in good condition but has been modified like the one in the op, lifted, bull bars, snorkel, AT wheels and tyres etc.

Or I just get a standard one and DIY!

If I'm realistic I don't need it to be "good" off road, I just like the look and always fancied one!

As for what I'm using it for, taking the dog for a walk, weekends away, perhaps a little bit of green laning with some mates

I am going to look at them this weekend.

Would I be best looking at manuals or autos?
