As above, heard nothing but good things about winchmax kit.
Same with rock-sliders.co.uk
I have one of his tank guards with removable tow hitch. Never mind tree stumps, I reckon it would stop medium intensity land mines.

Just out of interest what are you doing with your defender that requires a winch, it's one thing I haven't managed to talk myself into buying

it really depends on what you are after winch wise.

First chose the drive you want i.e. Electric or hydraulic.

Advantages of electric is lighter in some cases, lower cost, you don't have to be a mechanic to install one. Disadvantages lower pulling capacity than hydraulic winches, they have a duty cycle so they can only be used for so long before they over heat and they have to be left for a certain amount of time to cool down generally need a heavy duty cycle extra battery and split charging system.

Hydraulics advantages are much better pulling power than electric winches, the only limiting factor on run time is how long your engine can run without over heating, you do not need an extra battery. Disadvantages need to be mechanically minded to setup and use, they use hydaraulic fluid which needs resiviours piping etc which take up space, they are mega expensive, not as fast in most cases as electric winches, generally heavier than electric winches.

Good manufacturers for electric winches are Wran, Goldfish, and superwich.

Good manufactures of hydraulic winches are red uk, milemarker, and I think Ramsey also do them.

Have no personal experience with any of these brands, just an opinion formulated from reviews and a few people I know having them.
