Hi all,

I'm viewing a Freelander ES this Friday, just under 90,000 on the clock with service history (does read really well, with good money spent) but, as I'm not rolling in money like most of the country, what should I be looking for regards money spent on replacement parts? The car is up for just over 1k.

Always admired Land Rovers, I'm fully aware of the 'bad press' the Freelander's have, but sorry, I really like them!

Any replies appreciated.

Hello and welcome your not far from me I'm in scarborough

Take a look for a Vcu test a faulty Vcu can cost u upto a grand to fix as Vcu is 300 ird are like 600 for a recon one hippo Vcu test is what to search for. Check the coolest level of its a petrol ask question if and when it had the head gasket done same with the inlet manifold gasket as these can cause some damaged to your wallet aswell
 
Make sure the engine management light is working, not that I've ever seen a car with no bulb in it, no, not ever. In all honesty I'd spend a few bob more(if you have it) and get a TD4 engined Hippo. The engine is a BMW 2.0 with a cam chain & is worth it for peace of mind, not to mention the much better fuel economy and better performance.
Do you need 5 doors? the 3 door cars are cheaper and better looking, and have a monster sunroof.
See if there's somebody nearby who knows Hippos to come with you, it will be worth it.
I've got my 1st Freelander after 3 V8 Rangies, and I'm well pleased with it. A TD4 auto Kalahari. It handles, is economical, quick, comfy and practical, what more do you want? Pretty damn good off road too, even on road biased tyres.
Read the buying guide and if it passes the test, they're a great car, welcome

td4 is more complicated and parts much much more expensive.
yes l-series is belt driven but other than that it is bomb proof, cheaper to buy, cheaper parts, easier to work on and more reliable.
 
Grabbing large piece of forest as I type, I haven't broke mine yet at only 120K, and only open bonnet to fill up screen wash, Ted don't use oil, coolant, power steering stuff or brake fluid so what do I do?
Can't comment on L type, cos I've never had one-is that the same engine as the old rover 600? If so, you gents are right, it is an excellent, if unrefined, unit. I just don't like cambelts, I like chains.
Can't do much of my own "messing about" these days and have to pay money to watch someone else do it, although I did manage to make my tools happy when I changed the front brake pads.
 
Welcome to the forum , my wife has a petrol one and I have the td4 auto hse which is my second td4, we love them both but I do keep a check on her water just in case but she has had the hg done
