Hi all,
I a new comer to both this site and the world of Land Rovers, I'm looking to get a Disco series 1. From what I can see I'm looking at TDi 300's and manual.
I have around £2000 to spend and am asking what must have been discussed many times, I would like pointers at what to look for - good and bad, serious and not so.

I look forward to any help you all can offer and becoming a happy owner and member.

Did he mention check for rust?

Everywhere?

Then check for rust everywhere else ...

Rust is the main issue. Check boot floor,inner arches under bonnet,rear arches and the sills. Ask when the cam belt was done last and when it was last serviced and when I say serviced that means axle oil gearbox and transfer box. Check transfer box works. Don't spend all your money on 1 as your going to need money to fix it.
 
£2k should get you a fairly descent 300tdi - i'd spend less and keep some money to keep it on the road. You can pick up good discos for a lot less than £2k
 
Rust is a big problem!!
If you can find one without rust you are lucky!

They are out there, but few and far between.
 
Paid £1500 for mine and pretty rust free. Think all the oil leaks have protected the steel over the years lol.

My rear inside door arch bit is starting to bubble now but not that bad.

100% spend less than 2k because you'll only want to throw your hard earned at it as soon as possible!
 
as said, rust. take a torch and a screwdriver to have a look under the rear carpet at the boot floor, get down and dirty and give the cills a good poking. and have a look at the boody mounts and underneath the footwells. listen to the motor, make sure its running sweet.
 
Basically expect it to be ****ed, to be a family wrecking nightmare, hand bleeding pig and a wallet smouldering pile of ****e, if it runs for more than a week at a time you're doing well and most days you'll want to drive it off a cliff. You'll even consider remaining inside it whilst you do so, with a MIG welder shoved up your arse and a Haynes manual to read on the way down.

If yours turns out better than that you've been lucky.

Hello Andy, where in the uk are you, as buying from a seaside would be Much worse than buying from inland, Big Rust Problems, as for the rest of it much as what everyone else says. Apart from the jokes that is, I am on my second one now, as I was a bit of a novice when buying my 1st.. Turned out to be a very bad rust bucket. Try to get a middle-ish milage motor, preferably manual. Good luck, get the right one and you'll never regret it.

WOO HOO!!! I've been lucky.

I agree with most of that, but, would leave the mig welder out of the equation :)

So rust is the big point to look for ?
I'm looking closer to the £1000 mark now and definatly a manual.
I have seen an 'R' reg 300tdi xs in decent condition and no real visible body rust just the odd bubble but only small, I will get a good look underneath and inside at the weekend so I'll let you all know how it goes. It has 170k on the clock but have been told it has been looked after and serviced.
I have been told the xs are heavier on the mpg than the other models ? Has any one got any experiance of this?
 
Hi Ade, I'm in the staffs area so just about as far from the coast as possible.
I am looking to use it for 10 miles a day for work and to travel around with my dogs to the local shoots we work on at weekends on and around Cannock chase.
Milage shouldn't be a huge issue as I won't be putting any real distance on it.
 
Hello Again mate, that's all good then, It is about average on 170k maybe just a tad over what i would like, but that's just me. The rust prob's are mainly on the underneath side of things. The bubbling on the outside panels ain't no trouble really as it's ally. The real points to look for are definately the boot floor, look from inside underneath carpet and rubber, this if bad, will have spread to the inner wings. Also look for rust on all wings inside and out, ain't much of a problem but by looking properly you will have an idea how much work needs to be done for the rescuing of the ol girl. The sills are a bugger for rust too, i ain't trying to put you off but i learn't the hard way mate.. I got a good'n now and i don't think i'll ever have anything other than a disco 1.
