Hello all,

My girlfriend and I have decided to invest in our first Land Rover. We've got around £1000 for the purchase itself.

What we're looking for is a mechanically sound one, with a chassis that doesn't require welding. Ideally it should have an MOT or be upto MOT standard. We're not adversed to doing basic jobs on it and don't mind if the interior and exterior will need replacing / refurbishing.

We would like a SWB model either a Series 2 or 3.

Are we being realistic with our budget and requirements and where are the best places to look at getting one?

Ebay is the most obvious place to look to start with. You could pick up what you are looking for for that money if you do a bit of searching. I personally would avoid 2.25 diesels though as they are seriously slow and smoky!

check out the local papers they should have 1 or 2 series as wah said check ebay out there loads of bargains to be had if you look hard enough.
 
Sounds like you've got yourself a good lady there! It's a great starting point in owning a landy to have her indoors keen on the idea. I think that budget should secure what you are looking for as long as you look hard enough. Keep a watchful eye for any landys that have been botched to get through an mot, there are always plenty more out there to choose from. Good luck!
 
Blimey I'd sell yo one for that. Seriosly, start with ebay, put a post up here if there is one you fancy and wait to see what others say about it. Look for a good chassis and overdrive (cheaper to buy one with it that fit it after) free wheeling hubs, if you are going to do a lot of road miles (better economy, less noise), good chassis, go for the best chassis you can - took me 6 to get 3 I was happy with - did I mention the importance of a good chassis?
 
Well it's being sold by someone heavily into landies which is a really good thing. I like it. I would be a bit sceptical as to it 'popping out of gear' suggesting a new box might be in order, not too much of a prob as you could get a cheap second hand one. Wouldn't be ideal though if you would have to pay someone to do a major job like that referring back to what you said about wanting mechanically sound.
have a look into why the box should be popping out of gear and decide, then maybe go and have a look.
 
Changing gearboxes isn't a problem if you take it slowly and have an engine crane around. Its not the hardest job to tackle although it is a bit time consuming....hetting a mate to help you would ease you into it even if he just reads the haynes manual - I guess they cover it.

Basically its seat box out (have a grinder ready and some nice stainless replacement bolts) then disconnect gearbox, attach rope, attach hoist, move, replace and put other box somewhere ready to weigh it in.

'New' box is is 50 quid ish and if you are getting a tax exempt one you'll save that in tax quicky chop. That said if it only jumps out occasionally, I bet you get the hang of holding it in second.....wait until the box gives up then change it. They arent so strong, but I'd use a series 3 box for the 2nd synchro :)
 
Well £1000 should get you something mechanically decent. I paid £950 for mine and it's pretty solid, just needs cosmetic tidying - which I've put off for 12 months now.

The Land Rover magazines have the most choice but always seem to priced a tad high IMHO.

Ebay has some choice but make sure you know who you're buying off. I did buy a total dud off eBay (although it wasn't the sellers fault I may add), so be cautious - although a mate of mine has bought several good Saabs off eBay for virtually nothing.

Local dealers are my preferred option.
