Hi Guys I am looking for my first Disco, I had a TD4 Freelander and I was one of the lucky guys who was very happy with it. Sold it last Nov and regretted it ever since.

So I have about 3k to 4k to spend, must be a Diesel and Automatic what are the common problems on these old girls that I should check for?

I am also hoping to get about 30mpg is that possible?

Thanks for any advice (I am searching the forum for answers myself)

Hi Andy, here are a few thoughts, in no particular order:

1. For your budget you will buy a nice early 1998 - 2000 TD5 auto. Get the highest spec you can. ACE is good, sls is great so long as you look after it. Much more refined road car than a TDi 300;

2. Unless you live in the country, don't do short journeys, have it well-serviced regularly and drive light-footed you are unlikely to get 30mpg on average.

3. All Disco's are expensive to service unless you do it yourself;

3. They are likely to feel quite sluggish, unless remapped;

4. Fantastic tow-cars and brilliant off-road.

5. If you do work on cars, budget for buying a Nanocom (about £250) diagnostic tool.

I run a 2002 Disco TD5 auto ES and she is a beautiful car. She is regularly serviced, de-egr'd, de-catt'd and remapped and she goes very well for a Disco. I reckon to get about 28-30mpg but I cruise on the motorway at 70mph, not usually faster due to the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

My advice? Get used to travelling to find a good one; try lots so you get a feel for how they drive; go for best spec ES; go for best service history.

Good luck

Dave

Well I am well on my way to finally being a Disco owner as I have placed a deposit on a 97 300 TDi ES Automatic.

I kept some of my money in my pocket so only spent £2500 which is about the right price for the car I think as its in pretty good condition for its age with full leather and everything electric wise works inc both sunroofs and it has no leaks. It only has 114k on the clock with full history.

One thing don’t work which i hope is just a seized linkage and that’s the diff lock gear stick thingy :confused: I don’t know how the hell it works but the lever goes side to side but not backwards and forwards. I searched the forum and hopefully that’s all it is, as looking under the chassis etc it has no sign of ever being off road so its probably never been used, and I don’t plan to use it for that either, not just yet anyway :D

I reckon so but fer someone who live close its gotta be worth a look

'Cept anyone close by is going to come from a very shallow gene pool & will probably just buy it as somewhere to store their banjo.

If I was in Norfolk I'd take a punt on it, but then if I was in Norfolk I'd take a punt on me sister.
