Hi all,

Have recently joined and will sort out an introduction post shortly....

Just wondering if anybody can help me locate (if still possible) anywhere that sells the following type of light guard:

I saw a post on here a while ago from Mr Noisy but I'm wondering if anybody could help me locate a source for a pair of these? I'm wanting to secure my facelift lights and these seem fairly good at doing that. Better than the plastic options that seem to be available at the moment.

Thanks Spong. I have seen those in photos, but I did hear about bolt croppers being an "easy" method to stop them. I presume being hardened steel would make that method harder and also they would at least stop the opportunist. I guess that is kind of what I am after, just something to stop the average thief, anyone determined would take them no matter what I try...

I had considered (given I have a steel bumper) welding some light guards such as those I've linked above to the bumper, or at least securing them with non-standard fixing to make removal more difficult for a would be thief.

I take it you have a D2. I think Spong thinks you have a D1.

If you weld the guards to the bumper, How are you going to remove the lights to change a bulb?

For the light bars, It appears the original company has stopped making them, but a new company called Stowe products have started .

OK, IGNORE this, looks they have stopped making them as well.

Hi Neilly, yes I have a D2 and I was hoping if still available the D1 light guards may fit or be adaptable.
I agree, light bulb changes would be difficult with a welded guard...maybe bolting something on would be the best way. I'll have a look at Stowe and see what they offer.
I have considered making a template and manufacturing my own strap/guard which would 'hug' the front face of the light and bolt inside the engine bay/under the bonnet but still be removeable when needing to change bulbs.
 
I have started making my own, If you do then you have to hug the light profile as the gap ( at least on mine) between the headlight and bonnet is not that much. I am going to have to remake mine to get them tighter to the light.

Ah cool, would be interested to see any photos you have of your current ones you've made? I figured maybe some 5mm bar bent to the shape of the light, then flattened or welded to some flat bar to go under the bonnet and under the bottom of the light.
On a slight side note, I assume the Facelift light thefts are still occurring? I just seem to have read most info about them in older threads but have been assuming it's still a reasonable issue.

I used 6mm bar,

I will remake using 5mm bar, also I have had to allow for the washer fluid bottle , which you do not.

Here is a pic during the making, I welded an m6 bolt on the end and drilled a hole in the bodywork under the bonnet, If you look at the stowe pictures then you will see what I mean.

Yeah I see what you mean. I'll have to get thinking about what design to go for and how to mount it. I think your approach seems pretty good and should deter most potential would be thieves!
 
I have some bars fitted on my Disco headlights. When I bought them they were just the plain steel so I just gave them a bit of a coat of paint to match the rest of the vehicle.
Fitted underneath the bonnet relies on a large "cable eye" which is welded onto the end of the bar and it's then fitted under one of the bolts which holds the whole light fitting in place. A longer bolt is required and a spacer piece, both of which were supplied.
The one point to remember about any external security device, no matter what it is or what you do, all you can hope is to either deter or slow down the villain.
Yes, these bars could be cut using bolt croppers, but even though a Phillips screwdriver and some kind of lever might be in his set of pocket thievery tools, a pair of bolt croppers might be a bit too much of a "flag" if he's caught hanging around Tesco's car park with them sticking out of the a*se pocket of his jeans.
One of the problems with the grille type light guards on the D2, and yes, they are available but I can't remember where is that all the fittings for them are external, mainly just self tappers either into the wing or into the plastic trim by the inner edge of the light.

Agree with you, it's got to be about being a deterrent/slowing them down. Currently without any bars I feel it's only a matter of time so I'm wanting to get some sorted soon :)

Yes I've seen the plastic grille type guards but as they're plastic I've already decided against them but they do have the external fixings which wouldn't be too difficult to undo.
