Hi All.

I already have a nice 4.6 litre LPG Classic Rangie - love it to bits.

Thinking of getting a 90 to go with it - would consider any configuration.
Limited budget - circa £2k - which doesn't buy a lot of diesel 90, as I'm not too keen on the early (pre 200TDI) diesels - and definitely don't want an NA diesel.
What are people's thoughts on the 2.5 litre petrol?
Any good?
What's it like getting bits for it?

Would possibly consider a 3.5 V8 90 - but it must be an original - have enough trouble insuring the classic rangie with it's 4.6 engine!

Anyone in the Glos region selling one?

All comments welcome...

Ta,

Mike.

Are there no 2.5 petrol owners out there???

Meeee!! I got one!!!..mind you im looking to change the engine to a diesel, either a 300 tdi or a Nissan taxi engine. But ive had no problems with my 2.5 petrol its been a great motor , i bought it about 10 years ago and it was 5 years old with 46k on the clock and have only done less than 80 now. All ive ever done is change the oil/plugs and points twice a year, and last year i changed the carb and distributer and it has never let me down EVER!. The only thing is fuel consumption , i prob only get about 18 to the gallon so for short trips i take the cab. I was on a tv show a couple of years ago with my landy and in south east Spain, we drove down there , i drove my 90 to Spain and for 3 months worked hard renovating a house in the mountains and then drove home again and let me tell you the 2.5 engine never missed a beat!.

So for reliability i cant fault this engine (maybe i was lucky)..btw if i manage to get a diesel then this engine would be for sale:)

I took a 1984 2.25 petrol 90 for a spin earlier today - it's the one on ebay in Lydney.
Brought back loads of memories of being in old 109's - with a really sweet engine.
It was quite a bit quieter than the diesels of the same year. Nice engine. As for that particular 90 - no - I want a smarter vehicle than that - It's all there, and works, but it's a bit rough. Nice engine - sweet enough when warm, but she needs a new exhaust (rear box at least), a service and tune up - probably a new set of leads - and there's a lot of play in the steering. nice otherwise - engine was really sweet when warmed up.

there's plenty of peeps on here that have had years of good service from those engines you are so quick to dismiss

i drive a 90, 2.5 n/a :) it were ( after 24 + years) getting sluggy, so after a full rebuild its got years left in it , so i have no intention of swapping it, yer wont win any land speed records with one, but they are a good reliable engine,
the 2.5 petrols are getting less and less, they usualy replace them with a 200tdi etc, but thers plenty still about, £2k will get yer a good one

Yeah - there's a brown 2.25 litre on Ebay now - looks in lovely nick - but too much money for me.... (too far too!) I'll keep waiting...

I have a 2.5 petrol and after a little bit of work now runs very well. Got on E-bay for £1.5k back in June. Wiring to coil was heath robinson but £50 worth of work sorted that. Its pretty nippy but fuel consumption is not the best but for short hauls its great. Have considered a diesel but would prefer a V8... sod the fuel consumption :)

I think a 2.5 petrol would (as much as it pains me to say this) be a much better option than a diesel from the same era. I have only ever sat in one as a passenger and I must say, it went well enough. It wasn't anything to talk about but it certainly had a lot more go than the 2 1/4 or 2.5 diesel, very quiet and smooth too, perhaps a little too quiet and smooth for me being a diesel junky. It would cost a lot to run in fuel terms but it all depends on what you want. If you're just fancying another Land Rover to mess about in and you don't fancy a diesel as a bit of contrast between the v8 that you've got then it wouldn't be too bad an option. There certainly seems to be plenty of them up for grabs in very good condition for very little money, solely because of the petrol hungry engine. Personally, I'd be much more tempted to sell the petrol engine and drop a tdi in, someone will insure you cheap enough, just have a look around.

I have a 2.5 petrol 90, drove 4300 miles in it from the uk to the bottom of italy and back and it was great. Fuel economy is not a particular problem, if you really want, as I have done is to convert it to lpg. Tinley tech sell the kit and I fitted it myself as its quite straight forward. It would be nice to have a 200tdi for the slight extra power, but then I'm sure if I swapped it then I would miss the fact the petrol is quieter.

I've had mine about 2 month when i got it, it had been stood for a year so after the purchase price of £1100 quid it cost a further £700 to get it through the mot and i was going to swap the 2.5 petrol for a diesel coz it wouldn't run smoothly but after a lot of tinkering with the engine and the help of the kind folks on here i've cracked it. so i have decided to stay with the 2.5 petrol. :D

The biggest problem with the 2.5 petrol is the webber carb, they don't like dirt one bit.
I had loads of probs with mine, stripped and cleaned the carb, new inline filter and all is well.
