Hi guys,

pretty new here so i'll give you some back story on my Discovery 2.

It was my dads vehicle, he owned it for for nearly 7 years or so and it was his lovechild. It's the Metropolis V8 with all the extras, Sat nav, cruise, ACE the lot.

About 4 years ago the engine overheated, so my dad stripped the heads cleaned everything up, did the valve seats and whatnot, but when he rebuilt it and turned the key he suspected oil and coolant was mixing. at this point he fell out with it and its been parked ever since.

he sadly passed away 6 months ago, and instead of selling a none runner for pennies im willing to get it back on the road. i've been searching high and low for an engine and cant seem to catch a break with either it costing 6k+ or it being a scammer company wanting to rip me off.

it's understandably seized at the moment, with it being parked for 4 years. the body and chassis are in really good condition, it has been undersealed at some point which has helped it out.

i'm no mechanic, but i am an engineer, so could do most of the work (i think)

my questions are;

Does anybody know where i can get an engine from?
would i be better off removing the engine and sending it for refurb? if so who could i send it to?
my dad never got the heads skimmed, would it be worth taking them off and getting skimmed and trying to run it?
its lpg converted and id like to get rid of that, i know it makes them run hotter, is it hard to remove? ecu an issue?

sorry for the novel, just looking for some advice, thanks in advance

I'm in Aberdeenshire but I think I know of someone that may have a Thor V8 engine it's partially apart as it needs piston rings replaced. Would that be of interest?

i'm ideally looking for a built running one, or someone to rebuild mine for me if possible

Lots of places will rebuild an RV8, but it will be pretty big cost tbh. Any engine rebuild is. £2-4k + I'd guess depending on who and what you have done.

You could have a go at rebuilding it yourself as an option.

Else if you are just after an engine keep an eye on ebay.

Are you looking to keep the car or sell it? If the latter, you can buy running lumps on eBay fairly cheap. Last time i looked

i'm wanting to keep the car. ive seen a few engines on ebay for 750-900 quid. just dont know if its worth the risk. ive also never swapped an engine before

Can you rebuild yourself? Sounds like you're not in any rush to get it on the road. Theres a chap on yootoob, Loz L, rebuilt a D2 v8 might be a bit of a resource for you

ive seen his videos yeah. its not really having somewhere to do it thats the issue. ive a drive but no garage so thats why im leaning toward a swap instead of a strip down. dont get me wrong id love to take an engine apart and clean it all up and get it perfect but its not really doable at the moment

If you're keeping it then what was the engine like before it overheated? How many miles?
Might be worth taking the heads off to check condition
The Thor v8 will either have a dodgy head gasket or a cracked block which causes a liner to also slip
It is generally a good engine and you know the history, it would be worth getting it refurbished.. new lines can be pressed on making the engine pretty much bullet proof
Not a huge cost if you can do much of the spannering

i think it ran alright to be fair, but it wasnt mine so not fully sure. last MOT was 92k or around there. id like to get it refurbished. im just trying to find somehwere that would do it for less than a mortgage. id happily pay up to 4k

Get it in the kitchen 😜

Definitely worth stripping the top end off of your current motor to see the condition, were the heads skimmed?
