A friend of mine had to grind off an alloy wheel the other day as he foolishly over-tightened a locking wheel nut...

Has anyone bought/used a locking wheel nut removal kit?

Are they any good?

Thanks!

Never used a proper one but I have found an impact socket hammered over the security nut does the trick.

Thanks for the links Biggeeee, but I've read most of those links and it doesn't really answer my question.

I'd like to know if there is a consensus amongst those who have/have used a tool, as to which might be the most 'useable', practical, lock nut removable set.

When I read a few reviews of some on the web there are a few that say the reverse-thread type are crap, "don't waste your money" etc.

If I'm looking to buy something I'd rather have some feedback from here before I commit to buy.

My mates Old peugeot was a tricky one. He tried everything but finally had to grind off the wheel to get access to the nut..

The only time I had a problem was on an old Ford and the good old nut splitter did the job. (No good for studs though :D)

would think the pikeys use a decent impact gun with a good lefthand spiral threaded nut remover...

All depends on what locking nut your trying to remove really some are easy ( wack a socket on ) some are not so easy iv got a locking wheel nut removal kit from snap on years ago and it does get the real tuff ones off, iv also got a selection of locking wheel nuts from motors over the years, iv never had to cut a wheel of yet

I know of thieves who used to take the nuts off leaving the locking nut on and then lever the wheel to snap the stud off.

I bought a set on ebay worked for my td5 hardest bit is getting the nut out again

find a threaded bolt the same thread, then reverse the operation with the bolt held in a vice or something tuff (weld the fecker to summit)
ensure the threads not too long though :D

its theopposite reaction when the locknut hits the bolt head
= wheel nut remover unscrews off the spiral left handed thread

= I think.

;)
