what's the proper name for those stupid little clips that hold the internal door mechanism rodding in place and can you still get them new?

Have a look here. If you mean parts no.9 or no.23 then you can get them new, Google is your friend. Locks & Handles-Front Door ??? LandRover Discovery Series I 1989-1998, Body & Chassis

Much abliged. I use google alot, but "stupid lock clippy thing" wouldn't have been much of a search.

It is number 9.
