Hi - am new here and love the site!

I have a problem with my '94 300 TDI. Whilst driving a couple of weeks back suddenly loads (and I mean loads!) of white/grey smoke came out of the exhaust, I couldn't pull over so kept driving and it eventually went away. This then happened periodically. It now happens every time you go for a drive - even straight after starting up. I don't think its the head gasket, the breather pipes are clear. When you lift off the dipstick or take of oil cap the engine is breathing. There is no water in the oil.

Anyone got any ideas? I am really stuck on this one!

Cheers all.

Any noticeable loss of power? If so, really does sound like the head gasket. Watch out for turbo runaway!

Take it to a garage and get the coolant sniffed, if there is any trace of hydrocarbons in the coolant then the gasket is away. A decent independent garage will do this for you for a tenner, saves a lot of time.

Thanks for the responses - there is no loss of power but I will take to my local garage to see what's what! Really hope its not the gasket!

Cheers all.

Well I would hope it is the gasket because all the other alternatives are much more expensive.
