Hi Kiwi

Yes, there was red loctite on them b****d bolts. I haven't the equipment to heat them up, so it was 'large hammer and hang off the spanner' time .
I'll be replacing the balls and use grease. fortunately there's a Bearmach place not far from me, so hopefully i'll be able to get everything there.

Hi James

There were no wires or anything on top swivel pin so it mut be non abs then.

looks like non abs to me, keep the pics coming,it may well be usefull to others.

***** UPDATE QUESTION TIME *****

Right, so 130 squid lighter thanks to Bearmach , Ive got nearly everything I need. I got Timpkin wheel bearings (seem to be the best named) coming from Paddocks in the post. so hopefully they'll be here early next week.

Tomorrow will be spent removing old bearings and cleaning all the parts ready for re-assembly

question time ......

Re - Paper gaskets.

The gasket that was on the hub seems to be quite solid and plasticy, but the one supplied by Bearmach is paper and seems quite flimsy. will this be ok ?

picky of old gasket

and .....

looking at other threads etc, there's mention of using gasket 'adhesive/sealer' .

What is this stuff, and do I need to get some ?

ok , no info re: gaskets, so I must have correct stuff.

so, I've fitted swivel pin races and seal into new Ball.
sorry didn't take any piccies . I'll get some for next update.

also done this........

cleaned out thread holes with tap M10 x 1.5

and cleaned out theses too.....

now then ..... more numpty questions

does anyone know the thread/pitch for the Brake Caliper bolts?

This came out when I took the seal and bearing out of the Stub Axle.

What is it ? where does it go back ? and which way round ? if anyone can point me to a part number , I would be grateful.

also, Wear on stub axle ...

what do you think ?

also, noticed this on disk

Its not cracked all the way through.....

replace disk ? both disks?

Beer money rapidly running out :(

Ref the gasket i made my own from 0 .8mm paper works fine and was roughly same thickness of oem gaskets, your original looks TOO thick imho

looks more like corrosion mark left by pad overnight, ps try polishing mark out on stub axle seal surface with wire wheel or very fine emery

you would have a sensor and wire entering top swivel pin,abs cvs fit either abs or non abs

But that is no proof of actually having ABS.I replaced my entire breaking system as a non ABS,it was only when i purchased swivel ball that i found out it was originely ABS but was bypassed at some time.
That swivel is fecked and needs changing.

what made you think it was originally abs ?

Disk needs replacing and that little plastic seal in you hand should have a spring in it,which is probo fooked,it is an oil seal that the half shaft runs through.
Hat off to you for diving in.

exactly thats a good way of telling sensor in top pin,as you say chrome balls differ in that they use defender pre 300 tdi chrome balls instead of std rrc and disco

All this said,i would not strip down the axle to the point the op has and then put it back together again without changing that housing!.

abs axles are often fitted to non abs discos or defenders checking top pin for sensor is a good way of checking
