Looking back through the forums there's a higher ratio 5th gear available when getting a refub box, is anyone running this and how do you find it in real life ? as I'm in the process of specifying my refurbished box I may incorporate this if its worth while (I will also be running a 1.2 ratio Xfer box) Any assistance welcomed

Ive a 200tdi with a disco transfer box I seriously doubt you'd need a raised 5th gear as well. With 235/85 R16 and the disco box you don't normally get into 5th until 40mph anyway..

how fast do you want to go? with with a higher 5th I doubt you would be able to use it much on UK roads.

Do you do much towing with the disco transfer box? I've got 235/85 on my td5 defender and was looking a putting a disco transfer box in for lower revs on motorway, (if that's how it works) I tow a 1.5ton caravan regularly

I use motorway 30% of the time, minimal towing launching & retrieving small boat etc, looking to be at 1700-2000 rpm at 70 on motorway

You say you have asked Ashcroft, why not use their ratio calculator to see what it looks like with the gearing you think might be in the rev range.
Not sure how your engine is on low revs.

Motorway? This is Norfolk,
Its 90miles to the nearest motorway from where I live. And 20 to the nearest dual carriageway .
I do tow 1.5 tons occasionally of boat and not had a problem, however I rarely get to 60mph before the next turning. . Oh and of course steep hills are somewhat rare.. .
I have driven on motorways and up proper steep minor roads without trailer up in Yorkshire again without problem.

I run a 300tdi 110 on 750x16 tyres, with a military LT77 gear-box and 1.2-1 Discovery transfer box.
Unless you have some sort of monster engine, I would suggest that the standard 5th gear ratio is about as tall as you would want to go with a Discovery transfer box, assuming you are using similar tyre sizes.

I've decided to go with std 5the gear ratio gerabox and 1.2 xfer box (As I have currently) for my refurbishment
Thanks for the inputs

I have 1.2 transfer box, lt77 gearbox, 200tdi, and 265/75 tyres, I can happily tow around a loaded twin axle car trailer. On occasion you may need to start in low box and change up on the move, but this is only for proper hill starts, normal driving it is not a problem and does not feel over-geared.
