My Discovery 3 has developed a problem where without warning it goes into limp mode, the display tells me that HDC is not available and then the suspension lowers. I thought this was voltage related as the car cannot be started with side lights turned on if you try it goes into a similar condition. I replaced the alternator with a new Denso unit which raised the voltage from 13,7 volts to 14.15 volts but now after a 100 miles the voltage is varying between 13.6 and 13.8. The battery voltage is at 12,45 after being stood overnight. The car will restart normally and the problem seems worse when climbing hills, sometimes it will occur every 1/2 mile or so but this morning I drove 150 miles and it only occurred 3 times. There are no warnings apart from the orange warning lights (the A in a circle, handbrake fault and eventually suspension lowered) but it makes the car difficult to live with, can anyone shed some light on this? Is there anything else controlling voltage, is the new alternator defective or is the voltage a red herring?

Many thanks.

Hi Gary,
The car is a 56 plate I bought it with 95000 miles on the clock and it has dome 165000 now. Its s 2.7 diesel and manual box. The battery was on when I bought the car. I bought a Land Rover code reader and do have a multi meter, any help gratefully received

Sorry I haven't had it on diagnostics mainly because I don't know where to go. And I haven't charged the battery although it doesn't seem sluggish in any way, I did fit a new alternator but it seems no different to.the old one.
