Don’t throw a genuine one to replace it by a cheap rubbish one.
Low clutch is very common on the freelander, but hard to change gear is an issue.
If it’s hard to change gears, is more certainly a clutch issue.
Changing the master is only usefull if it’s leaking, or you renew the clutch slave.

Thanks. I'm monitoring it at the moment. Seems that first starting and first few minutes driving. Hard, but not impossible. After that a lot easier. But clutch is firm when pressing down but has to be on floor to change.. I've a rear brake light switch, possible master clutch servo, and changing crank case breather filter. Also going to clean the intercooler pipe work of all the gunk.. I'll leave for a couple weeks before I do do anything and monitor the clutch problems. Then do them all together..hope I don't need a new clutch.....
my clutch is also very low and you had to be forceful changing gear, however i took the airbox out and doused the clutch pivot with bulldogBDX (like WD40 but better IMHO) and this has made a difference in the smoothness of the gearchanges, i can only think it was binding slightly and now gets full travel. worth a try at least.

Works on 1.8 but TD4 has concentric slave within gearbox operated hydraulically.

On the TD4 if the slave is not leaking, so no loss of fluid, a new master but a LUK or a good make may solve it.
I have extended the master cylinder pushrod by 6mm to solve this in the past.

Have you tried bleeding the system?
I was nearly thinking of scrapping mine because I believed the clutch had gone. On reading the WSM, I realised the system could be bled. And from the top, so no crawling underneath. Brown fluid came out until the good stuff flowed .
Its been fine since.
Why I had it in my head it was a sealed system I don,t know.
