Great little runabouts. Got a 2.25 petrol Series 3 1976. Fuel economy crap but no road tax and low insurance. Good fun in summer with the canvas rolled up / off. Diesels are either conversions or Dutch army imports as all their Lightweights were diesel. Many have been butchered so if you're looking for an original unmolested one they're beginning to fetch top money. Later 5 crank bearing engines stronger than earlier 3 crank bearing and can be identified by X shaped ribbing on block.

Mines not original as it has been rebuilt on a galv chassis and the original owner has swapped out some of the military switches for standard series. It has got the correct military gearbox, engine and lights but only has one fuel tank which is a bit of a pain. The 2nd fuel tank beneath the passenger seat has been removed to make room for a battery box so the battery is in the dry. I've fitted an electronic distributor and a fairey overdrive and changed the tyres to reduce the road noise as it had cheap Chinese rubber on it when I bought it. I fitted Insa Turbo Rangers 235/85/16 which fit nicely on the 7.5/16 rims.

I had a S2A lightweight years ago & didn't really get on with it. Having owned 'normal' LR's (both S2A & 3) I found the L/W's driving position put me too close to the wheel. That said, the car had it's good points insofar as it felt 'tighter' on the road & the engine sounded different somehow, probably due to the multi-blade fan.
