hi are there any auto electricians here

I have just fitted a new bumper to my 2005 defender complete with LED lights I would love the lights to be DRL but go off when side or dip beam turned on then come on as driving lights when main beam is on can anyone advise how to achieve this without a switch in circuit?

Very intriguing , but how would u turn on the DRLs in the first place without a switch there;)

Otherwise i assume it would be directly off a switched live when u turned the engine on

Just thinking ref the MOT regs , if there has to be an isolating switch so that they with either come on with the full beam or not ??

Maybe using 2 x relays

Does indeed need one of the auto wizards to help, lol

I’ll get my coat ;)

You will need an ignition fed fused live feed for DRL's that is linked through a 4 pin normally closed (live) relay, the relay feed is tapped off the sidelight cable so when lights are turned on the relay activates and cuts power to the DLR's, you can use an inline fuse to DRL's. You will need the relay socket the relay plugs into to wire it up. Ebay sells the sockets/relays together.

thanks scooby so relay opens when dip beam is on but closes again when I switch to main beam?

Could I use an additional relay fed by alternator or battery voltage sensor so they only come on when the engine is running?

thanks Scooby I will give it a try but not sure if DRL module would let me use em as driving lights with main beam and a couple of relays only a few quid

Its a project and gives you something to do, must get on with my list of things to do on my landy.

You will need to do this for high beam circuit as well but use the same ingnition live linked in series to second relay. ie, in one side of relay out the other side into second relay out the other side to DRL,s.
You can also buy a DRL module

Holy s**t man. I've got one of these bumpers, think it's 2 drl's and 2 fogs, which I was hoping to fit but after trying to work all that out think it'll be eBay & keep original.:)

It sounds more complicated than it actually is, its a simple circuit really. And you can buy a Spot lights relay kit from Halfords or ebay which is another easy fit.
