So, having been almost caught out a couple of times I'm going to try and install a buzzer that sounds when the door is opened with the lights left on after the key has been removed! Has anybody successfully attempted this? I think I know how to go about it, just looking for extra input. As an aside, I have a scrapped '99 Avensis, any idea where the buzzer might be located in that....before I go and pay for one. Thanks......

Buzzer on ebay for a couple of quid and they come with instructions, i havent fitted one for years but dont recall it being difficult.

Got mine from vehicle wiring products and(same as Lynall) fitted yrs ago and don't recall it being difficult.

A buzzer is easier but why not wire the light relay energizing coil to the ignition wire....so once your turn off the engine and take the key out the lights will be off? I will be doing this with mine soon.

You know you are going to learn to regret saying that.......................LOL..

Shhhhhh!!!

I'm guessing that would be illegal in GB.

Why so? If I leave the lights on in my brothers Fiesta, take the key out they turn off. Mrs car is the same but the sidelights stay on

I have a cunning plan......................

Tie a piece of string to the light switch...........tie the other end of the string to a crocodile clip, attach the crocodile clip to a sensitive point of the human anatomy . When you leave the vehicle you will get a reminder to turn your lights off, and if it is dark you can follow the string back to the light switch.

Cheers

Yeah, I'm talking rubbish:oops:
However, I would prefer the option of lights on keys out because I find it useful, I have the buzzer though:)

Tbh Im not great at turning the lights off! Second nature in my Defender but when I borrow me dads BM I leave em on all the time, then it beeps at me till I turn em off. So all in all a good thing I guess lol

I'd take a feed from the lighting circuit, to a relay of the the normally open type, wire it's coil to the door switched feed to the dome light so when you open the door the relay closes and the buzzer sounds if your lights are left on...

So you can still use your dome light from the switch without the buzzer coming on put a 2/2.5A diode between the switch and the door switches and put the relay feed before the diode so that the manual dome light switch doesn't activate the relay and hence the buzzer.

Other options exist too, such as a second door switch purely for this buzzer circuit.

I generally drive with lights on all the time, but never forget in my Defender because the switch is right next to the ignition.
lt's become second nature as l pull the key out, to check the switch with my finger.

Today l had a VW courtesy car while the Landy's swivels were being done, and forgot every time l got out of the thing!

Good job there was a buzzer.

I will install mine to energize with the ignition switch in series with a photo cell, it will have an override using the stock switch. Its not that I am lazy, but my memory is crammed and I am used to not touching any light switches in my cars :) I just bought an older VW Buggy to restore and upgrade, it will be getting the same mod.

My headlights only work when the ignition is switched on, there's a relay under the fuses that control them. Up until now, I thought they were all like that!
1990 CSW.

My 2004 TD5 headlights turn off "but" side and tail lights stay on when ignition is turned off and headlights are left switched on.
