Hi

I'm looking at buying a lightweight, I think it'll be aseries 3?
It's a non runner thats been parked up for a couple of years, it's very tatty but looks all there. Axles look about rotten but it's on a mint galvanised chassis.
Any pointers to a rough valuation would be much appreciated.

If I do get it I have a 200tdi disco which I'd like to use to swap any possible drive train parts over. Has anyone done a lightweight TDi conversion and if so what components can you use/ how much of the disco drivetrain can be used?

All info greatly appreciated:)

doing one at the moment just changing engine everything else the same ,bought exhaust conversion for turbo from ebay for defender but still fits

Thanks for that james, I take it you are keeping the series transmission then?
I was wondering if it was possible to graft the LT77 in with disco transferbox for relaxed cruising:cool:

involves moving gearbox mounts and guessing you dont want to take an anglegrinder to your shiny chassis

Series transmission is well capable of taking the 112 bhp of a 200 though you need to be gentle with the power off-road if you like your half-shafts.

Easiest way to change the gearing is to fit an overdrive, which with series gearing and a 200 will give you a cruising speed of about 65, though some folk prefer to change the diffs but then you lose a bit of your low gearing.

Thanks Blue beasty, thats good to know. It won't really be used for off-roading per se, just pulling a trailer occasionally and ferrying people and dogs around on a farm.

Also remember that the series front axle is not designed for permanent 4wd. My option would be 200tdi engine with series transmission then stick a couple of 3.54 diffs in from coiler. The ones out of the disco will do if they're 10 spline.

cool, more good info. Thanks Hughesy. It's starting to sound a bit easier than I envisaged which is always a bonus.

if your towing a trailer around a farm then i would leave the std diffs in as i think the 3.54 diffs will be too high geared also std diffs are better for climbing hills you will still get 35 mpg and a top speed of 70 + if you need to go that fast.
