I live in darkest Lancashire .The lights on my 2002 p38 are very poor unless I’m on main beam ,I really would like to uprate them to give me more of a chance to see where I’m going ,any ideas .At the moment I’ve got 60/55main dip and 55 main beam .

Thought someone was posting to own up. Rumour has it it was a Land Rover that caused that car park fire , at the Horse Show

Clean the lenses ;-)
Drive slower. :)
Better up-rated bulbs?
I asked a similar question about upgrade to LED lights. Responses made me think twice.
Several folks have fitted up-rated bulbs it seems.

Mine are fine. 55w is the maximum legal on halogens.
You could theoretically use Hid's as the suspension is self leveling and most have wipers.
However, the wipers must work for the mot if it has hid's

Could well be that the reflectors are corroded/dirty in which case the better bulbs won't help much.
As I say, mine are great as standard.

Just try some osram nightbreakers or philips extreme, check bulbs are seated properly in the housings too
Osram nightbreakers that's what I put in plus the 100 watters in the main beam .
Like search lights they are ! And they put some manners on them twunts that don't dip ,

Thanks for all your replies ,I’ve ordered a set of Osram night breakers ,so we will see how I get on .

I saw an LED upgrade somewhere. Think it was on U-tube. They need "focusing" but it looked easy. You need the wipers / washers if you upgrade though. And you cannot have it on springs either.

EDIT:

Watching that it does seam to be an improvement, just had a look on fleebay and can get a set the same from china for £16 I might have to order a set and have a play
I seam to remember someone on here who fitted led bulbs, may have been Doo

P38 dipped lamps are not the best, specially on unlit narrow country roads. Night breakers make a vast difference when fitted. If you drive within the limitations of those you will make good progress.

Think you might be right. Got a feeling @martyuk looked into it at some stage too.

Make sure they have enough resistance to stop the BECM throwing bulb faults and also they need to have the right pattern and are adjustable. A lot of the chinese stuff doesn't have that sharp wedge but a diffuse glow that dazzles every other sod on the road.

There's Osram Night Breakers and then there's Osram Night Breakers Unlimited which brighter, so they are the ones to purchase.

Have now fitted Osram Night Breakers ,they seen a lot better, now I can see where I’m going ,and main beams are superb.
