Hi guys. My freelander1 td4 2003 diesel can't start. When the Key IS in the contact and l turn it to start the car. Nothing happened. But when I insist maintain the Key on start position for about 20s then the ingine runs but doesn't start. I check with OBD 2 but no defaults. Some says the immobiliser ring IS not working well. Please Can someone help me?!
PS. Usually when I turn the Key in contact it takes less than 1s toi start quickly.
Thanks

If the temperature is above 15°C, there will be no glow plug light.
Can you hear the rear fuel pump running?
When was the fuel filter last changed?
Have you put a diagnostic reader on it that can rear live data from the EDC?
If so, what were the fuel pressure readings?

Unless you can read what the fuel pressures and various sensor are readings, it'll be very difficult to identify the issue with it.

The Pump IS runing well and I Can hear it
I changed Gasole filtre two mounths ago
But no diagnostic. I will do it and tell you back.
Thanks

Should be OK, chaps, thanks. 16 foot Fletcher with a 90hp Mercury on the back. Less than a tonne in total, so fast!

Interestingly my wife's TD4 which we bought at 56k miles has NEVER displayed a glow plug light at any temperature.

Testing it with WOW lights the lamp.
Only after some really bad starts this winter did I test the plugs. All open circuit !!
So, will change in the summer, but the light is lit by the ECU, it doesn't indicate when the plugs have power.

I am wondering if the ecu knows that the plugs have to be working for the light to come on (obviously at low temp).

Anyone know???

Anyone know???

I'm just guessing Andy.
The glow plugs are powered by a glow plug controller. I suspect that when all glow plugs are open circuit, it somehow tells the EDC, which then doesn't put the glow light on in response.

However I'm just guessing, as I've never needed to know.

My TD4 glow plug light only ever came on when the temperature was below 12 to 15°C, so though the summer it would be off anyway.

I'll look into it, as it'll useful to know.

Thanks John, really useful. I assumed the relay was just that, a relay!!

Must be some current sensing. So her plugs have never worked then!!!

Maybe if one or more are OK it lights?

I will change them and report back.

I assumed the relay was just that, a relay!!

It's called a relay, but it's obviously more than a simple relay, as it returns a voltage to the EDC, depending on what the glow plugs are doing.

I'd like to pull one apart, to see what's inside, and how it works.

Good one this. The description you gave Nodge was clear, but the relay is a standard 4 pin coil and contact. Circuits confirm this. It is driven on the gnd side of coil from the ecu so that could look for current drain and flag fault if no supply but there is no way it can sense plugs drawing current across the contacts. Unless I am missing sommat!!

Interesting. The glow plug controller isn't the shape of a standard relay, it's a black box with lots of wires coming out.

Can you post a copy of the wiring diagram, I seem to be missing any TD4 diagrams. :(

The relay in the L shaped control box is just that, a 4 pin relay. The box with wires along the front of the engine seems to be a distribution box to split to 4 wires for the plugs.

Will post photo of glow wiring.

Hi
I put a diagnostic reader and see that the HP fuel Pump was not working. We change it and now the car IS running. Thank you very much
