I read a few previous threads but can't find anything specific about weight of a 300TDi engine and box still together.

So...., I know it is probably over the limit, but do you think a hoist at its full extension which is 250kg, will cope?
 
can't understand why one would want to suffer so much and lift both units out together. there are only 14 bolts to be undone!

Why not, I think he's putting it in as apposed to taking it out.
Especially seen as it's only a rolling chassis so it will drop straight in.
 
Same as aaron, id definitely recommend doing the whole lot together and save yourself a lot of hassle... also, i realised that if you use only the back engine lift point the whole lot is balanced very well (i had the t/box on as well though!)
 
I've just done the whole lot with my "Draper 2 tonne" engine hoist on the 1 tonne arm setting. Took it like a man and didn't hesitate at all. One trick: take one of the front wheels off as it lets you get in tight and also use a triple suport to balance the whole lump. I tied three loops at the gear box / bell housing junction, the rear end engine lifting eye and the front end lifting eye. I then threaded the lifting rope from the rear loop up to the lift eye on the crane, back to the middle lifting eye, up to the crane again and onto the front lifting eye. I then went back for good measure and doubled it up.

Cracking info and great pics. That hoist seems to have a longer reach than the Clarke one I'm using. Realised I could use the old gearbox cross member as a lifting beam, so I can hold it further back than rear lifting point. That way it will reach. Will use Barkingsnake's technique to get the balance back. :)
 
And here are my efforts with a 1 tonne crane on full stretch

Should have slung it different because when I lowered down it was too far forward on the mounts, not by much though.

think the engine alone is 200kg
r380+lt230 about 100kg.. so it's a bit over the limit but it should cope
 
Very interesting trax. That is the first record of engine and gearbox weights I've seen. Cheers.
Landowner, I've read a few of your contributions to painting threads, obviously always recommending blue. But that engine, gearboxes and handbrake are tremendous! Is your fuel tank blue :)

it is.. oh bugger.. don't take my word for it then! :D

btw i lifted out an engine+gearbox out of a disco and defender.. with a 1 tonner on the second setting http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/ya3tdic-yet-another-300tdi-defender-conversion-248418.html i never finished the thread though :D (the defender just had the rad and bits unbolted, not me going to town with the grinder)
 
I ended up with the Draper 2 Tonne unit as (a) it seemed well OTT for the task and (b) they delivered to our "off shore" location in the Highlands. For the £230 odd I paid I have to say I'm well chuffed as it's really helped take the stain out of my back and the wife's (just had a third child via c-section and not up for lifting for a while!).
I was concerned that it would "snap" with the two units but it worked superbly. I would have preferred to have used chain (like Mr Blue) but I had a load of brand new agricultural rope hanging about...so doubled it up.
I noted that a few strands were crushed afterwards and so binned the "Lifting Loops" where the slight marks were. Paranoid? Better than the whole lot on the garage floor etc.
It also did a cracking job with the rear bodywork.

LT77 Is approx 50kg dry weight and 200tdi engine is around 275kg fully dressed and dry, transfer box id another 54kg dry.
 
380Kg is a bit OTT of the 250kg setting for me :eek:
I'll try the cross member lifting beam in the morning on the 500kg setting.

my crane was on 350kg setting and it pulled out the 300 and R380/LT230 combo (both wet)


Was creaking a little though :eek: but it survived unscathed!
 
Old cross member lifting beam worked well.

Used a bit of rope around the gearbox to stop it from dropping down. 'Cos using the beam took the lifting point past the centre of gravity.

Bit of heave ho by by son and his mate and eventually we got it lined up with the mounts.

It would have been much easier with a crane with a longer reach. Not to worry, it's in and its a major milestone for me.
