Right!
Good news (and for me) bad- I took the advice and rigged up an external fuel source and plugged it directly to the filter and started undoing unions.
I couldn’t get fuel out of any of the FIP outlets using this method but lots of air bled back through the pipes over about 30 mins.
I then thought to give the engine a quick crank to see if anything would be forced through to the ends of the injectors.
It was this point that the lift pump decided to function more than it did last week and my engine bay was given a good dousing of diesel (there is a learning point in there somewhere!)
Anyway it appeared that there was diesel around the injectors - although there was diesel everywhere…. So I tightened them up and there was life!
So thanks so much to everyone offering all the really useful advice - I was convinced I needed to swap the injector pump and I was so wrong, gravity really did do the trick.

But now I suspect I have identified an error in my rebuild as I’ve a puddle of oil on the ground under my cam cover drain.
I suspect from a quick google that it is the cam belt idler bolt gasket thingy as although I watched a YouTube rebuild vid. I didn’t realise that the location was different for disco and defender..groan

….and breathe
