hello good people

hope you can help with my problem,i have a 98 dse with 92 on the clock and it has been running ok until this morning when it turned over for ages before starting.i had the same problem when i tried again after work,
i had just less than a 1/4 of a tank of diesel.
i have read on here about the problems with the lift pump but i can hear mine running when the glow plugs are on,could it still be a faulty pump??
if it is,do i get a genuine one or is a pattern one ok to use.
many thanks for any help you can give me

darren

thanks for the quick reply,
would glow plugs die just like that?always started fine before this morning!!

I would say its in tank pump and are you sure you can hear it or is it some other pump or compressor that you hear. Is there air bubbles in the clear plastic pipe to the injector pump? Also check the leak off pipes for leaks

i can def hear something running although at my age it could be anything !!and yes i have seen bubbles in the clear plastic pipe!

Wish you had mentioned bubbles earlier. Pump you can hear running could be ABS pump, fuel pump is not usually audible unless you are a Bat. You need to get the air out of the plastic pipe for a start. Check the spill pipes between the injectors for leaks. Check fuse 39 and relay 12. You can force pump on by removing relay 12 and taking a lead from positive battery to socket 5 on relay 12s socket. That is the one that runs in the opposite direction to the other three. With live to that pump should run. You should see movement of the air bubbles in the clear tube. If pump is not working the injector pump will suck fuel from tank but can also draw air in past O rings on fuel filter or in through leaking spill pipes. So you have a bit of checking to do. And yes glow plugs can fail that quickly. You need three working plugs on three consecutively firing cylinders to get a start on a good day when it's cold it will be hard work starting specially if the timing chains have stretched and the pump timing is a little out.

Thanks for the reply.i have changed the spill pipes so now gone do the glow plugs and pump.shouldl I use genuine pump or is a pattern one ok to use?

Thanks again

Don't think you need plugs as wammers said you never told him about the bubbles start with caus of bubbles then move on

There are the joins to intank pump, pipe to filter and filter pipe to fuel injection pump

Fuel lift pump cannot suck air. It's not possible. But air can be sucked in by injector pump if fuel lift pump is not running. First thing to do would be check if pump is running, and giving good flow, it may just be a blown fuse or a duff relay. If it can be got running bleed air out. If not change it. If not a great deal of improvement look at glow plugs.

No but if the joints by the pump are leaky could suck air in remember dopey o rings and his pump still works :)

if i connect a 12v supply to relay to check pump works, what is the best way to check flow??
do i remove fuel filter and stick a bucket under it or is there a better way?

Take banjo off fuel injector pump when cold needs two people put in a jar turn on let glow plug do its cycle you should have a jar of 100 mm i think probably be corrected but I like to keep it going my self via keep cranking and ensure you have a Conterminous flow:)

I just drop the filter put a container under it and get someone to turn the key, if no flow next step is to bridge the relay, if still no flow it's either the pump or electrical connections.

ok guys, turned on ign but couldnt hear fuel pump running so i bridged the relay to batt and pump was running. i took of fuel line into filter and it was running out (didnt measure as i done it before reading last but one post!)next i checked the fuse but no fuse in slot 39!there was one in slot 40 which according to my fuse cover should be empty!!i took fuse out of 40 and put in 39 and pump runs when glow light is on,turns over but still not firing.is glow plugs next step?if so how do i check them?in my old cars i would remove them and put them across a 12v battery!

Thar ya go. Saved you a pump. Did you bleed the air out of clear line? You can check glows like that, but they get pretty warm if they are working, better just continuity check terminal to body. Flow rate of pump should be minimum 180 Ml in 10 seconds.
