Looks great.

I put an internal & external temp gauge there instead.

I would like to find somewhere else for my Scangauge 2 to go, rather than being on top of the steering wheel housing. Jury still out on that.

I put mine above the clock - see attached picture

Also, I found one of the amber settings for the display colour is green enough to match everything else (go figure).

After work this morning I thought I'd have a bash as the EGR blank and fitting the Gates thermostat.

Coming apart nicely....

Now I knew the EGR was dirty, but jeez....

Offending item....

I started the clean up process.

Sprayed the best part of a can of carb cleaner into the inlet manifold. This broke the grease down some, but not enough.

So I soaked the inlet manifold in a litre of Gunk. Whilst it was soaking I got on with fitting the Gates Renault 5 thermostat.

Top pipe came off quite easily. I used a Dremel to cut the band. Pushing the stat in required brute force and ignorance. I used a deep reach socket to push the stat as far as I could into the hose.

Refitted the pipe and went back to the inlet manifold. The Gunk had loosened the grease up somewhat, but not enough. I ended up using my pressure washer, fed from the hot tap. That cleaned out the grease nicely!

I cleaned the inlet ports out as best I could being careful not to drop the carbon build up into the port throat.

New Allisport EGR blank fitted.

Last cover to fit and I was done. Just as well as it was getting late and I'd lost the sun.

Fired her up and went for a drive. Immediately I noticed the willingness to rev, where as before you'd need to encourage her somewhat before pulling out of a junction, now she's much smoother.

Also, as a Billy bonus, the temperature gauge sits bang in the middle

MPG should improve, but I'll not know how much until tomorrow morning. I normally average 30mpg on my trip to work, so we'll see how much it improves.

Looks like the beginning of a long happy story! :D

Ive got loads of things I need to do to my freelander, but Im too broke to do any of them! :(

Great write up and pictures

Thanks

I enjoy getting my hands dirty, I get the feeling they will be dirty quite often.

In other news, my MPG has gone up by 1.6 MPG. I'll try cleaning the injectors with some Diesel Rhino to improve the MPG further, however I've got the feeling I'll be changing the injectors.

Diesel Rhino

Next up will be a pair of LR front drop links and ARB bushes, followed by an overhaul of the rear brakes.

Ease of fitment.

You have to take the inlet manifold off to access the water pipe, but all told it wouldnt take more than 35 minutes. Changing the LR thermostat requires the drivers side wheel off. The actual thermostat is located behind the water pump.

Thanks

Why did you choose diesel rhino over, say, Millers, STP ect?

So the Diesel Rhino turn't up yesterday. I've started the triple dose tonight. Not expecting much until at least the first half of the tank has gone through, but I'll keep the thread updated.

Drop links are a doddle, ARB can be a pain if the bolt head shear/round off

Drop links were indeed a piece of p!ss.

Jacked up onto an axel stand, off with the wheel

Couple of Spaniards and an Allen Key

Off it came

New one refitted. Start to finish? Less than 10 minutes.

Rinse and repeat on the other side.

Now, the ARB Bushes........

Offside was easy....

Nearside was a real ballache as the exhaust gets in the way! I'm cursed with Gorilla hands, so getting the ratchet in place, then getting a swing on it was a barsteward.

Perseverance was the order of the day. Eventually I get the new bush in place.

Old and new

The old doesn't look very old does it? An advisory note on the previous MOT stated the bushes were worn. I can only assume the previous owner had them replaced, however theres no paperwork to support this.

Labour in vain? Not really, the bushes did take a while to fit, but only cost £10. The knocking noise has gone so that's another job off the list.

nice write up and photos

Thanks.

Small update.

I'm now onto my 2nd tank of diesel with Diesel Rhino added (double dose in this tank). She's feeling very smooth going up through the gears.

I don't think I've left it long enough between removing the EGR/cleaning the inlet manifold out and trying this Diesel additive to be able to tell the difference it has made, however going back to how she drove when I first got her, to how she pulls now is like night and day.

I got 461 miles out of 57.85 litres which is 36mpg. I'm more than happy with that on the poxy A/B roads I have to drive to work which include going up over Ranmore Common near Dorking.

Next up will be sorting the rear brakes, then maybe a Ronbox.
