I don't often post on here, and when I do its in the Discovery 2 section as that what I own. However as a general LR fan, and there's not many out here (Greece) who understand them, I am helping an Austrian friend out with his Series 3 leafer. See below.

He tells me he bought it as rebuilt, and almost every nut and bolt appears to have been replaced, except under the bonnet, and the chassis is heavily waxoiled. When he got it a Mercedes engine was fitted, and he sourced and had fitted an apparently genuine series 3 2 1/4 diesel.

The issue started off with he reporting a problem with the clutch at the end of last summer. He is only here usually in the summer. I was asked if I'd take a look, and found the problem was the clutch slave was fu'bard, and had been leaking badly. Replaced this only to find that the clutch was seized!!. After some jiggery/pokery managed to get it free and it now works. It is very smoky, not just on start up. The cold start is now working, as it wasn't, but whilst trying to work out why it had no guts, I found the throttle linkage was a shoddily made system with thin metal brackets that bend, thereby not allowing full throttle opening. Not only that, but the observant will note that the pump end of the throttle cable is retained by an electrical block connector......which if excessive throttle was applied jumped out of the lever attached to the pump. I have temporarily fitted a bolt where it looks like a pinch bolt would normally be fitted, to stop this happening. It seems to me that either the cable is too short and is detained at the bulkhead end by a flimsy metal bracket that even LR would not have used, and the angle of pull at the pump end is not what it should be, the covering again being retained by a very thin metal bracket that flexes badly. The combination of both these is that only about three quarters, if that, throttle is available. See attached.

So my plea is does anybody out there have a Series 3 LHD 2.25 diesel with the vertically mounted CAV pump, (later version I believe), and can post some close up pics of the linkage at both ends, so either I can make some more suitable brackets to fit, or buy the correct items to resolve the issue. The proper cable has a 'U' fitting at each end, from looking at Rimmer Bros site, but I can't seem to find out how it is attached, and retained at both the bulkhead and pump end.

Thanks

Can't help with photos as mine's a petrol but this is what the parts manual shows. Also not sure if LHD or RHD.

Nice looking S3 there. So same but different as mines a petrol, however I have fitted an SU carb and had issues with an adapter plate that didn't quite fit on my LHD so I made one using some 5mm plate, drilled holes and cold bent it to shape in the vice, just an idea in case you cant get that part.
