I was worried about lending my Series 3 landrover to my Son in Law who's car has problems, because he proposed strapping my Grand children into it with him!

I thought you may be interested in my:-

Letter of Absolution
· The Land rover is a pile of ****e, but I love it!
· I wouldn’t like to drive it more than 5 miles though!
· Black ended key is ignition, rusty key is driver’s door, and small key is padlock on petrol cap. Passenger door locks with twirly thing on inside
· Ignition key has to be turned back a notch to stop the starter from staying engaged
· No seat adjustment, but ok for me. You WILL have a bad back when you get out though! (Your nerves will probably be shot as well!)
· Doors have no check strap so be careful on windy days
· Bonnet mounted wheel has a clamp missing but ain’t parted company yet
· Bonnet is EXTREMELY heavy to lift with wheel in position
· Needs full choke when cold
· Sometimes doesn’t tick over at junctions and cuts out, may need tick over upping some more, all though it’s fairly high now! Presently playing about with tick over, mixture, timing etc
· Petrol gauge doesn’t work and it’s a juice gobbler 15 to 18 mpg
· Clutch release bearing is noisy
· Gearbox is noisy; especially reverse which I try not to use a lot!
· If it rains, you get wet, if it’s frosty, you get wet from condensation as it warms up!
· I’ve never tried seatbelts so don’t know if they work.
· Tools are under loose passenger seat!
· It’s very drafty
· The heater blower doesn’t work, so wear a heavy coat! You’ll probably be sweating about whether Landies going to go and stop at the requisite times anyway!
· The windscreen washer doesn’t work
· Brakes are NOT servo assisted, but will stop you. They tend to squeak a bit.
· NO power steering but size of steering wheel compensates for that
· Turning circle is ****e
· Tyres are borderline legal
· Haven’t tried using four wheel drive yet but freewheeling hubs on front are set to two wheel drive. Has high and low box and four wheel drive levers and knobs, best left alone methinks!
· Front prop shaft has wear and probably accounts for a lot of the noise
· Speedo seems to work, sometimes, but because of the noise I’ve never had it over 50mph, normally tottle along about 30mph
· Lights all work, although they ain’t the brightest!

I somehow got the impression it had helped change his mind when after a test drive he said "F*ck that!!!":D

Well I'm hopeing to get another soon so can't be that bad can they, well can they?

Nooooo.........for cripes sake don't be put off!

As I said, I love mine to bits, it's just a bit different from driving a modern car, more agricultural as befits it's heritage:)

I was weaned on old fords, Anglia's, Escorts, Cortina Mk1's etc and to me the Landie drives similarily, and you always seem to need to be tinkering with one thing or another to keep it running!

I may be wrong, but if all you've ever driven are modern Japanese/Eurocars with computer controlled everything, then it could be a bit of a culture shock, thats all!:D

Some dull people like cheapo Jap slitty cars.
They and their cars are BORING.

Those boring people sit at home watching TV while people like us are out in the rain under our Landies trying to sort a UJ.

I know where I would rather be!

I've run LWB S2'S and a S2 SWB but not since a few years I have one on the grass I want to split, Land Rovers are fun but as we no not everyone's cup of tea, I even had one GFwho refused to travel in mine, huge shame and her loss, I think.:)
