So I've had my Freelander around a month and done just under 300 miles of which 185 of those was driving it back to where I live. Last week I noticed a leak coming from the back of the car drivers side near the wheel which was diagnosed as diesel (I posted this in the Freelander section). When I left the dealer RAA Sales in Wilmslow Cheshire, upon picking the car up they said to me that any problems I have a 3 month warranty where I pay for labour and they will pay for parts. I rang them explaining the situation with the leak and they said to seek a quote locally and get back to them. I booked it in to let the garage look at it and they decided it needed fixing as they considered it dangerous. They investigated the leak and fitted a new fuel filter which on a Freelander means taking a few things off to get to the part. They then contacted RAA Sales with the quote who advised them the filter was costing to much and not to fit it. The local garage rang me explaining that they already fitted it as they had the car in bits and went ahead with the £19 filter and advised me RAA Sales wasn't happy. I said I will pay the bill and ring RAA Sales myself but in fact they rang me minutes later advising me to take the car elsewhere for another quote or drive it 185 miles to Wilmslow baring in mind diesel would have been still leaking and they would look at it but there was no way they were paying the final bill of £79 + VAT. I've paid it and now out of pocket. How do I stand legally

Are you taking the pee... £79 + vat.... Its not worth bothering with....

I would send them a letter saying Pay up £79 + Vat or I will take you to the small claims court for £79 + vat and then some ( 3 days lost or your time and make it £300 or so) They will likely pay up, it will hoever cost you about 40 quid to file this... Put some sensible argument with it.
Its an odds game I have had an insurer refuse my 750 for fixing a fence a lorry went through......... I held firm and they ended up paying me just shy of £2500 for the same fence. Next time be more careful "3 month warranty where I pay for labour and they will pay for parts" what kind of shoddy warranty is that... They have stolen or Britpart parts and charge you 90 quid per hour for monkeys.

Well fuel filters, especially if a few years old, can be good today( holding pressure) and then go to hell and leak tomorrow. Most warrenties (at least here) will not cover disposable items on a car, filters, tyres, brakes, belts, light bulbs, battery etc

Are you with the AA or RAC ? I take out a legal Insurance to help recover my losses in this sort of thing. I find that the Insurance claims can be a rip you off charter. As for your filter it's a bit difficult with today's tree hugger's having a vehicle in a workshop leaking fuel over the floor. As I found with workshops you have to obey all these new rules. I imagine the garage was simply stopping it getting worse. In fact you were lucky as a old customer was told to stop driving the vehicle by the police, a motorcycle cop in a car pulled him over after seeing a rainbow on the rainy road surface. Recovered into the nearest garage £300 +Vat Ker ching ! Hopefully the garage has given you a full appraisal of the vehicle of any other bits needing work, that is your next step, find the strictest MOT station and put it through a test, if it passes then you have a good motor. You can re test a motor at any period, even with a MOT. As a MOT is only at that moment in time of testing, if your MOTTrix finds loads wrong then you can ask them to fix it in the 3 months or trading standards will be your next step. Warranty for Labour you pay isn't good at all.
