2 x 18w = 3amps - 5 amp cable just to keep the resistance down a bit. You don't really need a relay but it's probably a good idea to have one. Main beam feed via switch to relay coil, direct fuse to relay contacts then to lights. That way the spots are switchable and only come on with the main beam. Plenty of relay diagrams on the site.
 
Yes you can wire them straight up with in line fuse. But why has he shown a picture with them on in bloody daylight.

Will be used just with an on/off switch,
so live and earth from fuse box to switch,switch to light with 3amp fuse, and 5amp cable ?

The other downside to not using a solenoid or relay is that if you have a short you could damage anything on that circuit. Inc your new LED lights.

The proper way is to use a relay, it is really not very difficult to install.
 
Well decided to take your advice and use a relay, after searching for wiring diagrams for relay. Stripped the Mud dash out to find a suitable live feed ( just using an off/on switch )wired the spots up and checked they worked by going direct to battery , all good. Proceeded to follow wiring diagrams all wired up put in fuses, and feck all. Checked diagrams checked relay was clicking tested all wires with a meter still nothing, after a couple of hours of head scratching and muttering obbsenaties only thing left was too replace relay, then there was light, it tops up it was a faulty relay.

Hi Matt , I'm pleased with them, neat solid and seriously bright, only thing ****ed me off was wiring was different colours on each light.
