Theres been some good dialogue recently about viscous fans.
My question is; If I remove mine and replace it with an electric Kenlowe for instance, with on/off manual switch or thermostatically wired in, what is the optimum size to fit?
Would 12" be too small, go for 14" or a 16" ?
For the little amount of use it may get in this country perhaps the smaller one would do.
What do people think?
I could go and ask my local Indie garage, but I`m sure there`s as much knowledge and experience on this forum to answer the question.
 
666 George, you've got me thinking there! Will they fit a 2.5na d'you think? If it's hooked up to the thermostat, will it go off at the right temp?
 
Would think so, mine was a TD. I used the switch for the rear window heater as it did'nt work. IF it get hot just switch it on but it was ok in the summer, I only put it on for "just in case".
 
666george - which model mondeo electric fan will fit our Landy 90`s?
I`m watching a 1.8 zetec one on ebay at mo` - will that do it do you know?
 
Dunt bother, you'll never need it. Too me vicious fan off nearly 2 years ago, never even come close to needing it. The temp sits at just below half, i once managed to get it up to nearly 2/3 by towing 2 tons of logs up cornwall's biggest hill but still didn't really break into a sweat. Yer in norwich - it's cold and flat!!!

I ran for a while without a fan on the road, coz mine was about to jump through the radiator and it was fine. A bit different off road though, I have a kenlowe fitted now and it comes on for a while after the engine is shut down as the stored heat builds up, good for protecting that old head gasket.
 
In the 2.5 na, people refer to the fan as being viscous, but it seems to just go at the speed of the engine, so I'm wondering if it actually works as a viscous fan, or if it's just static? Perhaps it's seized. I've never really had my landy go beyond just below half way on the temp gauge, so I don't really have a lot to worry about, but I just wonder if the fan actually works how it's meant to.

They always do, they dont idle as such but I dont like them they take power away from the engine and overcool the engine. I meen why do you want a fokin fan going first think in the morning.

Thats the concept and as the engine demands increase it goes faster, they still fit them to trucks, but car manufacturers have all tossed them, because of economy issues.

The new free wheeling pulley on alternators is the latest to reduce wasted energy.
 
I have had the temp guage up to max in the red, :eek: the day I bought it in Liverpool and was driving back at 80mph where I could (yeh yeh I know, but thats what the speedo said!). I was new to Landies and didnt know what it could or couldnt do comfortably. :doh:
Anyway, I think I`ll take the advice to remove the fan for now without a leccy replacement and see how it goes. From all the comments, the only issue I might get is when I go off roading.

And odenne - yer right, pretty flat and frackin` cold round here. Locks are freezing up every bl**dy day. :(

Took mine off 3 months ago, been green laning in Derbyshire, and on 3 P&P days, not been an isssue, at the weekend we were in Derbyshie towing people up winatts pass in the snow, yeah I know how cold it was but the temp gauge never moved. ;)
 
winnets pass is quite steep hehe. went to rowter farm camping a few years ago which is up the top of winnets pass.. love it around there :)
 
If your not moving fast the Viscous fan does help move air through the intercooler though, if you've got one.....
 
The 90 has got an oversize intercooler on it. Does that effect any decision making I have to do? Wouldn`t want to lose power :D
