Hi there I have developed a leak on my td5 and understand this is a common problem. Would chucking a bottle or 2 of this Lucas stuff do more harm than good or is it good stuff? Lucas is a good brand.

It's a temporary fix, it supposed to softern the seals. As for "common" a leaking steering box outut shaft is only a problem when the seal and or shaft is worn.

Where is the best place to get a new box?

You can get a recon one for as little as £150.

Unfortunately, I did this, and the recon box leaked as soon as I filled it up !!!.

I ended up putting a new Adwest one in for £275+vat.

Cheers.

if you are thinking new box anyway in the mean time chuck in a cap full of brake fluid with the steering fluid it worked on mine and stopped the leak, it does the same thing as the lucas gubbins, it swells the seals, i did mine about 6 weeks ago and to dat it has stopped a leak that was costing me about 500ml of fluid a week at one point.

It's weird there seems to very little not even noticeable loss from the pas chamber but it's leaving puddles under the car.

I used 2 bottles of the Lucas stuff after my box started dripping. Seemed to work for a few weeks and then the box just emptied all over the road and I ended up buying a recon one. I think that once they start leaking you're better off changing the box rather than spending money on something that will only be a temporary repair.
