so I noticed a patch of oil on the drive, smells like gear oil but clear,
Turns out the little canister on the side of the shock is leaking,
Any idea if it repairable or better to replace?
The cost is painful, hoping maybe to find a good used unit

I presume you have the later type shocks, the name of which escapes me, just like your oil, lol.

What do they want, £800 a corner?

Genuine LR is around £500, bilstien do one cheaper but still loads considering it’s likely to be a 20p O ring that’s leaking, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that these type of shocks can be rebuild

Not sure how I missed that because I’d been on there website and got a price nearer £400,
The Bilstein looks good value as well.

Glad it helped , indeed ref the bilstein because at least u know there good quality

Never know bilstein might have been the original manufacturers and end up paying extra to just have them in a genuine Land Rover box

Yes I wondered that, mine has the bilstein logo on it but would hope it’s not been replaced already within 100,000 miles

I would have thought an average set of air springs would last 50-60,000 miles, assuming it’s not had a hard life off road / towing

Replaced the front air shocks on mine and were originals , done 90,000 miles and could really tell the difference

To be honest don’t know what the kind of life companies expect there shocks to last, maybe 50,000 miles ??

It’s a very heavy car but would think the parts were designed with that in mind, I think 90-100k would be acceptable, would be bad if this was the second replacement though, i’ll check the history folder and see if there is mention of one being replaced in the past

Indeed, my D3 is pushing towards 3T and must admit I think 50,000 for a set of shocks would be a reasonable kind of mileage , considering as mentioned them being such heavy motors

Plse let us know as it will be interesting if they've been replaced in the past

Same really with wishbones , should average around 50,000 miles

Modern shocks should be good for 100K miles plus for road use.

I would of thought that, might be a heavy car compared to most but you would think the spec would be more heavy duty to cope with the extra weight

So here’s a thought, my car is thumping on the rear due to the shocker being knackered, presumably it has the electronic suspension control yet it hasn’t thrown a code or a warning

Never know it could be ur bushes as well , ie wishbones, anti roll bar, drop links ????

If i may say and know ur not daft , Please , please DO NOT get underneath it without axle stands, they will and do drop even with the engine off

At least it won’t cost u anything to have a look

Ps, must admit when I replaced my front shocks it really made a lot of difference

Shock is leaking, and pretty badly, can’t brlieve it has any fluid left but still it keeps coming,
Made the mistake once and only once of playing underneath a rangie without stands, figured air on off-road setting, loads of room, happy days, until a bag pops, not sure linford Christie could of moved quicker!!!

Wow it’s that bad then, sounds like a job for the weekend as I personally wouldn’t drive it in that condition

Ah yes know what u mean , mine decided to self level which indeed wakes u up pretty sharply

Was island 4x4 the best price in the end Or are u going to get a garage to change them

Island 4x4 the cheapest so will be ordering one. I know a pair is recommended but I’ve never followed that reasoning.

Is it OSR? I would have thought the NSR would get more of a hammering.
