I have just bought my first Freelander. It is a 2000 Freelander TD4 with 130000 miles. The car drives fine with no noises. However I have noticed underneath there is a leak of oil to the front of the rear diff where it joins the propshaft. I have attached a couple of photos. I had already wiped off the excess oil unfortunately. Is it likely to be seals or will I need a replacement driveshaft. How difficult is it to remove the driveshaft to either replace the oil seals or fit a new unit? Regards, Lee.

I will check for movement later. I have seen a seal kit which includes two driveshaft seals and a pinion seal. Is that the sort of thing I need? How easy is it to remove the diff to change the seals?
 
presumably if its only pinion seal leaking its the only one you need , preload on pinion bearings is set by crushing a collapsible spacer youd need one of those too, you tighten flange nut till correct preload is achieved
 
I have just checked by VCU by jacking up the rear drivers side wheel and turning it with a breaker bar with the handbrake off. Unfortunately my breaker bar wasn't quite long enough but I still managed to slowly turn the wheel clockwise which I think indicates the VCU is still OK???? However, what I did notice was the rear diff bouncing up and down as the mounting bolt which goes through the mount appears to have sheared off. Are they easy to replace? I presume the excess movement is what has caused the pinion seal to leak. Do I need to get a whole new mount and bolt? Ta, Lee.

Thanks, I crawled under the car today and could see the bolt wasn't sheared off but the actual rubber in the mount was u/s allowing a huge amount of movement :(

I don't really want to disconnect the propshaft. Would undoing the 4 subframe bolts and dropping that slightly allow access to remove the rear front mount?

Easier it is to disconnect propshaft,....have more room to work ....remove screws all diff mount.... check in what condition are....then you decide whether all or only change them centrall mount ...I've changed it all ;)
