So I have a Land Rover Defender TD5, I just recently started having a problem with fumes coming into the cab of the vehicle through the vent shown in the attached picture, and ONLY through that vent, it does not come out anywhere else. The fumes only start coming through after 15-20 minutes of driving but they are very thick clouds of something, very easily noticeable, to the point that if I have the windows up I can barely see through the smoke. I have checked several times for an exhaust leak and have not been able to find anything leaking and no fumes come out from the engine bay.

Any help you guys can offer would greatly appreciated, thank you.

If its the heater vent it could be a leaking matrix letting in steam. Does it happen immediately or after the engine has warmed up? Does it smell like exhaust?

It does smell like exhaust, but it only happens after driving it a bit and then only while I have the accelerator pressed

if it's white fumes then most likely heater matrix has split (as said above) and when up to heat starts banging out the fumes!

simple replacement job!

Do you happen to know of a step by step replacement of the heater matrix? Or at least a thread or video showing how to get it out?

might be something on here or google or youtube, but normally it's block the pipes, drill out the rivets in the box, unclip the control cables, swap out the matrix, re rivet, etc.

if it is exhaust fumes check the exhaust manifold ,manifolds warp and gaskets blow

I think you would notice the noise if it were the exhaust manifold gasket!

If you are changing the heater matrix it's worth considering an uprated item. I seem to remember a decent Youtube video about it.

Smelly crankcase breather-pipe fumes/crap just wafting through a hole(s) in the bulkhead and finding this as an escape point?
