Dose anybody know if it is leagal to do this to a series 3 from 1972. I am wondering as I want to add some extra driving lights and think this is a good way to do it but I am unsure if the vehicle would have had to originally come with the head lights in the center.

your head lights will still be in the wings as they should be ,center lights wired so as only main beam

Easier to bang a couple of spots on the bumper and looks less of a dogs dinner.

It might be easy to stick a couple on the bumper, but whether they work as well also matters. For mostly Green laning or Off roading I'd stick 'em higher, as they are in the pic, which seems to give a better light spread for seeing holes and the lie of the land/track etc

You could just uprate the wing lamps,plenty of kits about.Make sure whatever you do run them through a relay as the stalk switch does not like extra current.

The wing lamps are getting up rated as well but was just considering doubling down to get max light out put.

Would put them on the bumper but as you say the lights are more useful higher up and i have seen a few series 3 with spots high up on the grill and it looks even more of a dogs dinner personally. I don't know if A frames are still legal without being soft and spongey.

for my input it looks odd! I think a couple of spots will look far better - never mind easier and cheaper!

I did that to my 109 20 yrs ago. Not a brilliant pic but you can just see the centre lights panel.

The 'project vehicle' in the Haynes manual looks like a series 2 with lights added in the wings, not so neat as your example.

If you need em high, get a light bar on the roof.
I only have one spot light in the front of Henry and it's slightly less bright than a standard sealed beam. I think it's a fog lamp rather than a spot.
At an average top speed on the road of around 25, 50 on a motorway and 3 off road I am unsure how much I need lit up in front of me in any given situation.
I'd rather have one under the bonnet. It'd get more use.

I removed my front spotlights when I bought it. Depends on yer requirements. I have a rear spotlight which is a superb reversing light as well as seeing what's going on in the dark when hookup etc. I once inadvertently switched it on when some ****er was driving too close, that gave him the message I'd expect the Police to take an interest in a combination as suggested in the OP.
