Strange one this. Put it in to reverse first thing in the morning and it moves instantly. However put it in drive first thing in the morning and then you have to count to 10 before the transmission decides to wake up and move. I was wondering if a filter and Tranny fluid (no not that type you dirty minded lot) might improve things. Or is my box just about to take a **** all over the drive?
 
114k miles. Serviced every 10k/yearly but I'm not convinced the Tranny fluid has been changed in that time. I've only got the detailed service record for some of the services.

meant trans service? 50-60,000 miles the normal time frame for filter and fluid less miles if towing alot
 
Don't have to worry about the towing bit. Never had a tow bar till I brought it!!! I'll start by giving it a change then.

thing is with auto the torque converter never drains just what is in the pan....... So old school is buy lots of fluid change fluid and filter and get a pan gasket. drain take pan off clean it good refit change filter fill , then drive a day or two, drain and refill and then drive again for day or two then drain fill and change to second new filter.

This way you can have more cleaner fluid in the transmission instead of just 1/3 new and 2/3 old and mix them together.
 
If you take it to a garage that has a transmission flushing machine, they will hook into the cooler pipe and pump new fluid in at the same rate the dirty old fluid pumps out with the engine running and they keep the engine running till the fluid coming out of the trans cooler pipe is clean that way all the fluid is changed. Much better and probably no more expensive than you changing the fluid and filter twice, and you get to keep your hands clean.

The cost in NZ would be @ $250-300 NZD (125-150 quid) Not sure how much you would get ripped in the UK

It has been mooted that a 'Megaflush' of the transmission can do more harm than good....

ATF is a very good detergent, and currently in the Gearbox is a whole bunch of debris/dirt hidden harmlessly in knooks and crannies doing no bother....

A full flush of all the ATF for fresh can lead to all this harmless debris being released all in one go into the box contaminating everything and doing a butt load of damage....

Whereas a dilution of new and old ATF won't have too much of a cleaning effect and only loosen small amounts of crud at a time, which you will clean out in a couple of days and then replace with more new oil, doing this a couple of times will not lead to the 'shock' that can be experienced from a Megaflush!
 
Fluid and filter should be changed every 24K miles according to my info. If a fluid change does not cure the problem, try Lucas Transmission Fix.
When you do the oil refill, make sure you use the correct proceedure. Engine cold, fill until oil runs out of the filler plug or reaches max on the dipstick if it has one, start engine, move through the gears and back to P, continue filling until the correct level is reached, replace filler plug/dipstick, switch off engine.

As Data said, specified change intervals for ATF is every 24K miles for a P38 - if it's never been done I'm surprised the box is still in one piece - they're not filled with super-duper long-life fluid out the factory like L322s.

do they drop the pan and clean the sludge out
 
Fluid and filter changed today. It's obviously been done regularly. The box was replaced at 50k miles so it looks like the previous owner learnt his lesson and kept the oil clean. I feel it was just on the verge of needing changing. It was slightly brown but didn't smell very burnt the level was also good. The magnet in the sump was almost spotless. So I flushed it by draining and filling, then draining and filling again then draining and dropping the sump and clearing. Replacing the filter and then filling with clean. No more lag in drive and the box is silky smooth. Think the lag was down to the filter which was a bit grotty.
