Dont spose any of you chaps 'd know, but I have been offered for next to nowt a laycock overdrive for an mgb 1800, it is operated by an electrical switch, will this fit the series box?.
Someone said that the box in a series 3 is the same as the mgb, an lt44, but I'm not so sure about the final drive arrangement.
I'm sure one of you guy's will know, I'd rather have a switch than a lever.
I have to go and remove the box from the car thats part of the deal, so I dont really wanna got to all the weeballing about to find that its useless.

To be honest I've not heard that before. I've not heard of the LTnn nomenclature being used for a Series gearbox.

I would also suspect the final drive arrangement would be different enough. No transfer box on an MG :)

Certainly the 2wd versions of ZF autoboxes in BMWs have a support bearing on the tail shaft that is not on the ZFs found in LRs etc. I would suspect that there would be a similar arrangement on the MG and so the OD would mount differently.

Have I made any sense? :confused: :)
 
I suspect someone is talking rubbish.
The MGB is was made by BMC so the gearbox will have originated with either Austin or Morris. The Land Rover gerabox came from Rover.
I would doubt ther is any similarity at all, and I have never heard of an MGB overdrive fitting a Land Rover.
On thinking about it, I'm sure the MGB overdrive sits on the back of the gearbox and has a shorter propshaft connecting it ti the back axle, so even if you could make it fit you would need two, one for the back, one for the front!
 
Isnt that correct, I think I've heard of ZF box's in landys before, they are a good box in a boat and probably in a vehicle too.
And your right too Dave there is a diffo, in fact chalk and cheese, the landy o/d looks as though it fits on the side of the box, and the mg o/d is actually a 'slice' that fits inbetween the back of the box and the final drive flange.

The bit on the very right hand end in your picture is what I meant by tail shaft with support bearing.

The LR o/d fits into/into the PTO output on the back of the transfer box and so increases the final drive before it gets to the hi/lo ratios.
 
I believe some Range Rovers (& Discoveries?) had ZF auto boxes, but no Series motors, or MGBs for that mater!

Yes they do. And the ZF boxes is widely used elsewhere too. I was just using it as an example of a box used in both 2WD and 4WD applications :)

Apologies, I should have looked for the first reference to ZF boxes, instead of jumping in on the last.
 
the laycock overdrive will not fit any landrover, i think this confushion comes from the later landrover, this has a box mutch the same as a rover sd1 and some sherper vans, it was known as the lt77 i think and was derived from a pre war jag
