:confused: I currently am debating on what to buy next, I have a '97' discovery with 90k on clock, the problem is the bodywork is starting to go in several places and I want to get rid while it still looks good, Most of my miles are on the road, some of them are pulling a caravan (get your laughs and jokes in now) in the summer and a few of them are local green lanes,
Not having a massive budget do i go for the latest 300tdi i can find
or an early td5, I have seen tdi's upto 's' reg and I think that is the same year the td5's came out, can any one offer me any advice either way .
 
personally i would go for a late 300, but seen as you have got a 97 then you int gonnas get much later, go fer a td5 and you have got lots of electronic to go wrong, i spose its down to personal choice ;)
 
Freind of mine did similair, had a late 300, traded it in for a 2 year old td5, ran the td5 for 2 months but did not like the fuel consumption/ride/tyre wear, went back to the stealer for an oil change service and noticed his old 300 at the back of the site and ended up swapping back! He still has the 300 4 years on.

Dad had off me my 200 Tdi which we both thought was geat and i bought a 300 Tdi auto both of which were fantastic on and off road. He then wanted a series 2 Discovery Td5 which we thought was much nicer to drive, but seemed very sluggish of the mark. It was well maintained and came with a full service history from Bushbury's Land Rover. But we had horrendous trouble with the roof leaking and in the end he traded it in for an early 06 Defender which is too small and way too bouncy after long Discoverys and air suspension. I personaly having had to rebuild his 200 front end twice after encounters with " oh sorry i did'nt see you coming " would keep it and spend the £2 - 3,000 on reconing the engine and body work. I am only going to sell the 38 if i win the lottery. Hope that helps.

Thanks for replies, I may look at spending upto a grand on mine and take it somewhere and ask for a respray and treat all the corrosion marks
see if i can get a proper job done, Although a have seen a '98' 300tdi es with only 60k on clock for 7 grand (sound reasonable?) in mint condition and i am tempted. I wasnt aware that the td5 was renown for electronic problems, i thought the engine was a bmw 525 td a tried and tested engine, all the books say better mpg but general opinion seems to be that they are more thirsty when you talk to actual owners, i may have to re think a td5
 
98 300Tdi ES for 7K ??????

Thats a bit strong on the money, I would wait a few month's, Come April the trade will drop the prices to make way for summer stock:D
 
What happens when the inner wheel arches at the back doors start to go through, I take it its not structural but can it be repaired, mine are starting to go and along the bottom of the doors inside, can these be remedied easily with a view to the repair lasting, this is one of the reasons i am considering letting it go and buying slightly newer and better condition although point taken about waiting for april, probably the smart thing to do

I'm sure you can buy a repair/arch as they are the same as the Classic RR.
