I live pretty close to Rooley Moor road and have crossed it a couple of times since I got my 90. AFAIK it is perfectly legit to use the road. The Rochdale end is still open, the Rake Head end is open with a gate for access.

I, incorrectly, used the term bridleway when I mentioned the road on this forum and got flame grilled until I posted a link to a site describing the road.

To stop all the confusion I'm gonna go chat to the local plod but given the amount of traffic I see going over the road on a daily basis...I'm gonna be surprised if there is a problem. I'll let you know. :)

Hi Martin,

May be your right.
I alway understood it had been reclassified under NERC.

However, some time in September 2007, myself and Son in Law, took a drive up Rooley Moor Road, from Rochdale end.

After about 200 meters from driving on the sets, there was a police motorcyclist, parked up, and chatting to a group of lads.

he seen us approaching, and called us to pull up.

he asked us where we were going, and how long we were going to be.

I know the area well, and explained that we were driving to the old crusher at the quarry, then would exit the Moor down Rake Head lane, Stacksteads.

OK, on your way he said.

Looks like he was just there to stop the hooligans, and realising we were not out to wreck our vehicles, (2006 & 1999) simply said OK, on your way.
Cool cop !

How do martin, alls well??

Had a looky in a Landranger OS map. It classes Rooley as 'Other Road', I.e. white with black paralell lines. But in that section in the key there all drivable as far as i can tell. But i guess the ROWO will know better

Hey MC. Yep...all is cool...just a little work getting in the way. ;)

I had a word with the brother of an old mate who works for Plod in the Valley area. He said the road had been re-classified but they occasionally took a look and kicked off anyone being very silly. Fair enough I guess...you'd expect, and hope, they'd do that on a "normal" public road.

So, I guess the road is OK and should see no problems if driven appropriately. I didn't get an answer about the quarries but I suspect they are actually part of the Penine Bridleway so would be off limits.

thanks. ye i spotted the pic, take it that it was u i spoke to the other day then. ye speak to u in the week then

yer, twas me, i know girvtheswearve of this forum is out your way, he seems into the offroading in a big way, pm him see what he knows.
