Hi.

I have a problem with getting the car (83 Series 3) to reverse.

In high or low ratio, put the car in reverse gear. Release clutch and start to back up – then the car locks up suddenly as if something in the drive train is jamming solid. Car can drive forwards and goes into neutral on the high low box. But same story when trying to reverse in either high or low ratio.

It started doing it this afternoon when I was using the truck to pull out some bush stumps with a tow rope.

Any suggestions what to look at / for to start with a diagnosis please?

Any help highly appreciated.

Broken brake return spring? I've had an intermittent problem with a front drum that would occasionally lock in reverse.

do exactly wot jamesmartin said as this is exactly what mine did id get literally 6 feet backwards then locked up and couldnt get any other gears till it freed up then the same again

turned out its the nut behind the big round plate on the back of the gearbox

Hi all. Thanks for the pointers, I'll go have a look at the nut.

I did manage to get the thing to reverse up eventually. I took it out on the road and gave it a good run up and down the gearbox in high ratio, neutral, low ratio - 2 and 4WD.

It goes in and out of all gears now but doesn't feel as smooth as it was so I think some damage has been done. Also there is now a horrible crunching and a sound of gear teeth spinning against each other but not fully engaged when I go into 2nd gear. It stays in 2nd under power but if I throttle off it jumps out of gear. It wasn't doing that previous to the locking up problem.

Would the lock nut explain the new symptom, or is it something else that's got damaged as a result? (I can feel an expensive repair bill coming on . . . .)

Cheers

Andy

I had trouble with 2nd gear jumping out when I first fit my overdrive. After redoing the mainshaft nut and better centring the overdrive.

As James says check rear nut. It's fairly simple - remove middle seat and cover, remove transfer box cover plate, remove PTO plate (round thing on back with 6 nuts and studs). Tighten up nut, refit. Shouldn't take half an hour and doesn't require any real skill.

Only "difficult" bit is that the nut is a special castle nut and you need a funny socket to tighten it...or at a push you can drift it round with a chisel if you're stuck.

While you're at it make sure that the transfer box intermediate shaft hasn't popped out too. Second picture halfway down this page: http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgu...bnw=143&ei=bM9FUNzHBabB0gWn7oCQBw&um=1&itbs=1

Make sure the square metal tab is located firmly in the groove round the end of the shaft. If not you might be able to tap the shaft back in with a mallet and then refit the tab
