Take serious note of the comments about steering issues with 20" wheels and stop being a muppet
 
Hi to all,I purchased a 90 1 year ago with a 2 inch lift and 3.9 auto engine it was in bad shape but kept the above items, I've been doing it up for a year I've added loads of stuff including range rover sport 20x9 wheels with all teraine tyres, takins it for its first road test was very worring as anything over 40 miles per hour it is like driving a jelly ie it's very difficult to keep in a straight line!

I would be very great full if some one could help with this problem. Do I need to harden suspension? One thing I don't want do do is get rid of the 2 inch lift.

That's almost certainly going to be the wheels. As dogsbody said, if a P38 drives like crap on 20" wheels, a Defender is only going to be worse!

What other modifications have you made to compensate for the 2" lift and 20" wheels? Castor corrected radius arms?

bigger wheel require the suspension steering etc to be in good condition and set up perfectly it will show up flaws you notice less with smaller wheels
 
Checked the tyre pressures? Sure you not been drinking? Either could account for dodgy steering ...
 
you're the one who's stuck massive range rover alloys on a self confessed piece of crap and poorly looked after utilitarian vehicle with a 2" lift and wondering why its driving poorly. What you've done is ruin its off road capability and any chances of road comfort whilst polishing a turd and ignoring the mechanical flaws.

So in fact its highly constructive unless you plan on using the defender for kerb crawling in the wee hours of the morning then you've essentially made a rolling shed.......but don't let me stop you from looking like a wannabe BMW X5 driver

+1 whats the point :/ If you want a swag 4x4 get a Q7 or summit...

If I had to put money on the issue though, I would say the bushes are all fooked. Radius arms, trailing arms, A frame, shocks. Not that the mong wheels help anyway. Fender was never designed to have 20" wheels.

Also lifting a Defender usually has adverse effects on the handling if you don't change to castor corrected arms or bushes. Could also be the culprit. Promise me though you will go down to at most 17" wheels :p
 
If you have any pics of your set up might greatly add to diagnosing your problem ?

Plus looking on the bright side if its doesnt it might give us all a good laugh !
 
Matty stop being such a knob jockey. It's the wheels, the bushes, the ujs on the steering, the steering pump, the a frame, the trailing arms, the track rod, the wheel bearings, the tyres, drop link, swivel pin bearing, swivel balls, radius arms.

#### to be honest just show us the pics and let's have a laugh.

First of all, try the vehicle with the original 16" wheels and see if this improves the handling. (It almost certainly will)
When the vehicle was lifted, were the correct springs and shock absorbers used? Were castor correcting radius arms fitted? Are all the bushes in good condition? Have you checked for excessive free play in the steering arm ball joints? Is the swivel housing preload correct? Are the wheel bearings properly adjusted? If the answer to any of these questions is no, or don't know, then I suggest you get the vehicle looked at by someone who actually knows what the hell they are doing, preferably before you kill someone or yourself.
