Hi guys . Me again. Since i got through mot the beast kept stalling. I replced the fuel filter. And was still the same. .. but as a drove it to a garage all was fine for a few days so i thought changing the filter sorted the problem.

But alas it still does the same.

Basically i get in, turn key, takes a bit longer to start than it used to... reverse off drive no problem. But as i start to drive of it slows down (even though foot to floor) stops and tries to stall. No throttle response. Then just about starts again to drive slowly back onto drive.


Any ideas? Cheers
 
And try with fuel cap removed in case vent blocked, long shot I know but easiest thing to try. Not sure if a vacuum in a defender tank will cause a problem but a mate had this happen in his car, it started and after a short time cut out and after leaving for a while did the same again.

Is fuel gauge correct and fuel in tank. I once watch an episode of the Garage and they spent ages trying to sort out a car after towing it in after a breakdown before they realised it had no fuel and only after it started again and guy left the garage only to breakdown again down the road.

As far as I know, a vacuum will cause a problem in any fuel tank.

Could be a number of things, any smoke? Any air in the fuel? is it running rough? Coughing and spluttering or is it just stopping from smooth running?

Have you checked the air intake hoses for internal collapse?

Accelerator pedal does nothing while this happens.
Have to restart or pump pedal.
When i use lift pump lever to bleed air.. the fuel comes out of loosened bolt on filter housing after a lot of pumping.. But if i loosen the bolt and leave car running at standstill nothing comes out from bleedbolt. Been studying many forums. But would this lead to lift pump problems? Is fuel supposed to shoot out of bleed screw when car is running and screw undone?

You can remove the pick up from the top of the tank.
I think Tdi are self bleeding.
They run without a lift pump, but not very well.
And do check air hoses.
Ignore forums, other than this one.

There is no bubbles on this clear pipe when running. Tried with out filler cap and no difference.. with the bleed screw on filter undone should diesel spill out while idling?

You don't even know if it is a fuel problem, unless you have checked the air intake pipes first.
And that is the pick up, you just remove the ring of screws, and take it out and look at it.
And I am fairly sure Tdi are self bleeding.

Sorry mate. Where are the screws? Do i need to remove wires and pipe and knock the tabs with a hammer like a fuel pump to find them? Im a novice

undo out let from lift pump and pump lever or turn engine over if you have good squirts its ok up to there
remove hose from inlet and run engine ,that will rule out blocked air supply
 
I did undo outlet from lp to filter and did have a squirt( not sure how much is good) But when trying to undo the nuts on lp the top of lp was spinning with the force. Is this normal?

Also the no fuel coming from fuel filter when engine running is normal?

fit a new lift pump they shouldnt move then once new is fitted
slacken the pipe from filter to injection pump at the injection pump it should squirt well with no air
