As an update, firstly I am touched and grateful for the support shown here, as this is never an easy lens to stare down, realising you've been a bit of an idiot. Secondly, I have contacted the dealer and the owner has responded apologising and offering a replacement, including delivery, moving over roof rack and paying me the difference in value. Knowing that I have a mechanic ready to look at it, I'm happy with that and have chosen one from the range on offer. I followed the route advised here and it had a direct and prompt positive result, so thank you again. If my mechanic sees it and decides it is a no hoper I can always then push for an immediate full refund, but it sounds to me like the dealer will do this one right. I'll let you know.

As the dealer has backed down so quick, I would say No thanks just give me a full refund.

18K buys a hell of a landrover if you buy right, So give him the elbow and take the money, he seems on the back foot and you haven't even mentioned trading standards and where the MOT came from;).

I would agree with this.
Take the money and go elsewhere as the dealer knew he sold you a pup and most likely has friendly MOT station who would be in trouble if you reported them also.
When your money is back in your account let us know the dealers name.
 
From a dealer, who I have approached for a Repair or Replacement as per my Consumer Rights (it's not inside the 3 months immediate refund regulations).

I'd get the money back, as I wouldn't trust him ever again ....
 
The dealer will fight tooth and nail but you will win in the end. I would just write a letter and say you want refund or you will take it to the small claims court. With the photos/video and the mot history, add to that a summary from your competent mechanic the dealer doesn't have a chance.

I would argue against them repairing it as they have shown they are either incompetent and deceitful or just deceitful.

Great news you got it from a dealer for you.

Appreciate all the detail here. The mechanic told me he's expect it to cost 9-11K to fix.

Keep in with that mechanic / garage, you'll need a technical report for the claim against the Dealer

And when you have your money back, he may know of a decent Landy for sale which is pukka ...

Well if the dealer does indeed play the game the right way for you, please let us know who they are.
 
Did you pay any of the purchase on a credit card? That may give you additional protection should you find the dealer has a change of mind.

When you look at a replacement Landy, take someone with you who knows these vehicles. Check the MoT history and don’t be blinded by bolt on parts or spin from the dealer. There are lots of god ones about, just take your time finding one.

It might be worth amending the title of your thread to include the registration number of your problem purchase so that anyone else who does an internet search finds this discussion.

Dealer sold a landrover with multiple very obvious (to anyone who knows anything about cars - ie a car dealer) problems.

For serious money.

Dealer is dishonest. My continued advice is to get a full refund. I feel that this can not be reiterated enough.

Refund, draw a line under it, go somewhere else.
 
I hadn't seen the thread until now, but I'd hazard a guess that the MoT man does well at Christmas. None that I know would fall for underseal.

Hello.

An update from me - after contacting the dealer, the company owner came back to me with an offer to replace the vehicle with a TD5 from 2001. After reviewing that Landy, I decided to accept under various conditions. I was actually impressed with the call with the owner and the care afterwards. It came with a cash refund as compensation too. The underbelly was videod as it was being serviced and sent to me and 'my' mechanic, who was satisfied.

The new Landy arrived last week and I took it to the garage where the mechanic put it up on ramps. The underside is in great condition. The only problem he spotted was that the back door was replaced with a pretty cheap one and the spare wheel was pulling already on the hinges. I'm getting that fixed myself and the company owner agreed to compensate me.

Overall I'm impressed with the company owner and satisfied that the Landy replacement will do me very nicely. I am grateful to all the advice here. One thing - if that replacement had been dodgy I'd have then been able to request the full refund. As it stands, this has turned out better than it could have I reckon.
