Not sure where to start. Got my car back from garage 3 days back as it was not getting any power and they told me that it was to do with some oil on ECU red plug. I have mentioned this issue here http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/la...ot-getting-power-when-i-put-grear-255345.html

To cut the long story short I bought this car last year. Around december last year its top hose burst. On opening bonnet I can see the steam and water coming out of top radiotor hose. I got it changed from small garage in my area with brand new landrover one and it burst again after few days. So I took it to a garage which claim they are specialist in landrover. The other symptons at that time were diesel smell and black smoke. The guy at the garage removed the coolant reservior cap, sniffed it and dipped his finger in the coolant and sort of felt it and said there is fuel on the coolant. He said it seems like head gasket but they will do the tests. The later told me its cracked cylinder head. Infact they even showed cracked cyclinder head by doing some test which shows some bubbles coming from cyclinder head when they got it out and run some pressure test on it. Well they put new cylinder head, head gasket etc and also the fuel pressure regulator as it was leaking.

For next 3-4 months it was ok. The only issue I had during this time was that the gasket seal under the turbo starts leaking and the I got new which didn't cost much to be fixed. It did like 3000 miles after the cylinder head/head gasket job. Than one day coming back home in the afternoon, I noticed some leak and when opened the bonnet found that the coolant was over flowing from the coolant reservior cap. I filled it but it happened again next day. I took it again to the landrover specialist and they fixed it saying there was some blocking in the pipe from reservior and it should be ok. However it happened again after 300-400 miles. This time they said it seems the radiator needs to be changed as its not heating evenly. The also changed the thermostat and water pump and some buttom hose as well. And they also put new reservior cap. I never saw engine temperature going up during whole of this issue as temperature indicator inside was staying in the middle.

A week after that I got the issue with starting the car which I have mentioned in the link http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/la...ot-getting-power-when-i-put-grear-255345.html. It did like 500 miles after this issue got fixed.

Day before yesterday I checked the coolant and it was pretty low than the mark. I also saw some water on the top radaitor hose screw. I topped it up. I could see small cut near the top radiator screw. I drove it for like 170 miles and one more thing that I never noticed the temperature going up from middle. It happend again yesterday evening and this time there was stream coming from the radiotor hose near screw. Water coming from a leak near the screw and I was really worried as its the same point from where I started. I am not very expert in cars but it seems some pressure is building up in the cooling system. This time there is not black smoke and no diesel smell as well. This gives me some hope that it may not be head gasket. I sniffed the coolant and there is not fuel smell. I don't want to go to garage again as it doesn't make any sense to some more money on it now. I bought new top radiator hose and some coolant yesterday evening and I am thinking to change the hose. Its first job I would be doing on it myself. Can anyone give me some useful tips to confirm whether its head gasket etc or not as if its same issue than there is not use of changing the hose.

Your not having much luck are you!! You have got to get to the bottom of why the system is over pressurising, you will just keep putting new hoses on and bursting them....

I hate to say it but the obvious thing is the head again. What "new" head did they put on it? did you have it checked after a few miles to see that everything is still tight? It sounds to me that the head may have moved and caused a gasket failure therefore over pressurising the system. Lets hope I'm wrong. I hope you get this sorted soon.

Keep us posted.

Isn't the pressure cap supposed to relieve overpressure?
I once had a car that did this and I changed the cap. Job jobbed.

I put the new top radiator hose yesterday. It wasn't tough except the button clamp which took some time as I haven't got the proper tools. Lets see.

@Bloo its reservior cap was changed recently. Is there any way to check whether the cap is Ok by looking at its seals etc?

Regards,

mines doing the same ,its burst two top hoses ive chenged rad pump cap to no avail changed trhermostat too was building pressure all the timne hoses going rock hard changed the cap for genuine land rover one and pressure is not a problem hasnt burst any more hoses (bought landy hose these cheap one are ****e)
just overheats now but only sometimes !!! drove to hexham bout 30 mile round trip yesterday no problem did same trip todaay overheated boiled water withib 5 miles but nothings changed its got me stumped and its getting anoying only thing ive ntied is belt is screaming but everythig seeems to be spinning

HI,

You have just resurrected an old post, it might be worth while maming a new post and going in to detail exactly whta the problem is and what you have done step by step so far.

Good luck

Cheers

Sorry mate, almost identical to mine. Head gasket or cracked head. Popped a few hoses, genuine ones don't pop as easily. Replaced mine just before I had head done and it split again. Temporarily fixed it with duck tape and cable ties and it's still on with no leaks 18 months later! Never lost a drop!
