The ads are placed by Squidoo, the site host, which provides the webspace for free. They will pay a cut of proceeds to the page author according to the number of visitors, and pay more if any of the visitors chose to follow the advertising links. So MHM is quite right in saying that we are contributing to his income by visiting the site, and the lack of information does suggest that we're being asked to 'do his homework for him', as it were.

I look after a website for my Railway Society. It's hosted (for free) on my ISP's server. There are no adverts, so we get no income from it, but the entire screen area is available for me to play with and design how I wish, not just a small strip down one side. It may not be bbc.co.uk, but it does the job for us.

I would also be interested to know if he has asked Land Rover about the copyright of several of the photos he's using. They are clearly from Land Rover publicity material so he should have their permission to use them. (It's not as if there's any shortage of Landy photos on the web!)

If his site were based on a wiki, then everyone here would be able to add their content and you'd have a real enthusiast's site. (There are probably many already existing, so there's little point re-inventing the wheel.)

I won't be visiting again as all the Squidoo-added rubbish makes the page look really messy. Too many 'things' and not enough 'content'...

I'm a landrover owner, driver and tinkerer and I think you'll find having adverts that pay revenue is part and parcel of the internet.

To those that say it isn't then I suggest you look at this very forum as you'll find there's adverts on this very page.
So by damning me you're also damning this website and therefore yourselves too, kinda like throwing the first stone i guess?

So no I'm not a spammer, spammers would not of already signed up and posted dozens of topics already I'm just someone who likes to create pages on Squidoo as I think they are a great way to spread the word on something.

2 of my signatures are squidoo pages, the other one is to a travel website forum.

But to those that have given me good advice and helped thank you.

As a gesture of my good faith I've actually included a link-back to this very cool and informative forum on the squidoo page about landrovers. So in fact the 'spam' page is actually 'spamming' traffic back to here too. :)

anyone visiting this site has to look hard for the adverts

whereas on your site you have to look VERY hard for the content

plus, i suspect any money earnt from the link backs you get goes into your pocket, whereas money earnt from the ads here pay for a quality server and Accys beach home in Florida

Medusa I don't know why your server is in a buzzball over the site but I think it's more down to the isp being over-sensitive than any dodgyness, but I digress. :)

Squidoo isn't for everyone but it isn't that bad either. I've seen a lot worse :)

You don't have to do any homework Mr Pete. It's entirely the members choice to help with this and no-one elses.

I too have websites that I pay out of my own pocket to use. The reason is you get what you pay for. Adverts help pay for the hosting fees.

The 'free' websites have drastic limitations which are the reason I don't use them.

Mad hat man!

I can't they are put on there by Squidoo.
It's like me asking the head honcho's on landyzone to delete his adverts. They aren't going to do it and neither will the Squidoo crew.

you get what you pay for. .

at thew moment - lots of adverts, little content which is also inacurate. Not the best endorsement is it.

yu asked for feedback - you have got it - even if you dont like it - ditch the ads - that might mean changing from Squidley Diddley inc!

You're Mr Paranoid alright.
You want to know how much I've made from the Squidoo pages?

Zero!

The money is paid out every three months and so far hasn't even accrued.

Hey this can be like the expenses thing with the MPs, I can publish my 'earnings' and let you lot know how crap the payout is!

I make more in my day-job and off my own websites than Squidoo. In fact I treat Squidoo as a hobby, once you start getting too commercial about something you kill the dream, and that's something I'll never do :)
